The AIBA Men's World Championships is the signature event on the AIBA calendar going back 35 years to its beginnings in 1974 when the AIBA Men's World Championships made its debut in one of the heartlands of boxing - Havana, Cuba.
Boxers aged 17 to 34 are united every two years to compete against the best in their division from around the world. The athletes participate in the official 10 weight categories in accordance with the AIBA Technical and Competition Rules with hopes of claiming ultimate glory, becoming a world champion.
The 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships which are being held between September 25 and October 10, 2011 in Baku, Azerbaijan, will have a particular significance as the first major qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Following the success of the AIBA World Boxing Championships Milan 2009 with a record of participants, an even higher number of boxers is expected in Baku.(source: AIBA)
AIBA World Championships opens with style
From the biggest general weigh-in ever, to a colourful opening ceremony, this entire Sunday 25 September 2011 was a very special day in the history of AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Baku woke up pretty early with the Heydar Aliyev Sport and Concert Complex hosting an amazing general weigh-in. Around 600 boxers coming from more than 110 countries were just arriving in Baku, happy to be part of an historical event.
A few other tests later, they were all excited and nervous when came the time of the official draw. In the end, 570 athletes from 113 countries will compete at the competition in each 10 weight categories.
Knowing their destiny, they felt finally able to enjoy a very impressive 2 hours show that officially opened this 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships. That was their last time without pressure. Because as off Monday 26 September, it will all be about quotas, medals and titles...(source: AIBA)
