In the 69kg Final, St Michael’s Athy ace Christy Joyce had to settle for silver despite an outstanding performance against leading Cuban,Osnay Torres, It was still 0-0 entering the third and final round but the Cuban finished the stronger , gaining two points before the final bell tolled, to take the Welterweight crown.
Christy Joyce , at 17, is a fine future prospect, following in the footsteps of brother David Oliver , the current European Union champion.
Team coach Eddie Bolger paid this tribute to the young Athy fighter:
“Christy was magnificent and he gave it everything. I thought he was very unlucky not to get some scores as he definitely landed a few. He was right in it all the way and never gave up and was giving it his all right to the very
end, ” said Bolger, who shared coaching responsibilities with Tony Davitt in Anapa..
Ireland’s other bronze medallists at this tournament were Kieran Forde, Gary Sweeney, George Bates, David Roche and Stephen Broadhurst .
“This was definitely the toughest tournament I was ever at, added Bolger. “The quality of opposition was outstanding. Our lads were outstanding also. They gave as good as they got and the entire squad gave it 100% in
training and competition out here and we couldn’t have asked for anything more from them.”
