Ireland are guaranteed at least one bronze medal from the 1st AIBA Women's Youth and Junior World Championships in Turkey following Michaela Walsh's magnificent quarter-final win this afternoon.
The Holy Family BC Belfast featherweight marched into the World Youth semi-finals after recording a 16-6 victory over Celine Vastine of France at the Kepez Belediye Kapili Sport Salonu venue in Antalya in a repeat of the 2010 European Youth Championships clash which Walsh won 7-0 in France.
Walsh will now meet Ornella Wahner of Germany in Thursday's 57Kg semi-final.
Wahner beat Walsh 6-0 in the 2010 European Youth semi-finals, but Walsh, who lists her Holy Family BC club mate Paddy Barnes, the current European and Commonwealth champ, as her favourite boxer, says she's improving all the time.
"I'm over the moon with today's win. It was a tough fight, I beat her last time. I watched her yesterday and she has improved and it was a tough one today. She (Wahner) beat me the last time, but I've come on a lot since then."
Round scoring - Walsh was boxing out of the red corner: R1: 2-0, R2: 6-3, R3: 5-2, R4: 3-1
