Michael Kirkham, 30 years old, from Gaston, SC died on Monday morning as a result of a head injury during his MMA event at USC Aiken Saturday. He was pronounced dead Monday morning at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Kirkham was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Center after he was struck several times in the head. He was unresponsive when transported and never regained consciousness. He died of a brain hemorrhage.
This was Michael Kirkham MMA debut on a pro and amateur card in Aiken, S.C. Kirkham, a lightweight was nicknamed "Tree" for towering at 6-feet-9.
Kirkham becomes the second fighter to pass away due to causes from a regulated MMA fight in the US. The first known death in a regulated event was Sam Vasquez, who died on Nov. 30, 2007 from head injuries on a local card in Houston, Texas. Vazquez was in a coma for 42 days after the fight in October.
Mark Greubel, the trainer of Carlos Iraburo, has been quoted as saying that his fighter's knockout of Michael Kirkham this weekend was not any different from the thousands of fights he'd seen before.
The coroner says the cause of death was due to a brain hemorrhage and that the death would be ruled as accidental.
