WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will likely defend his title at UFC 125 on Jan. 1 against Josh Grispi – the first title defense of a WEC champ under the UFC banner. The fight would be the co-main event of the New Year's Day card behind a lightweight title fight between UFC champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Grispi (14-1, 4-0 WEC) is currently slated to face Erik Koch at WEC 52 on Nov. 11, one of just two events left for the WEC before being folded into the UFC. UFC president Dana White announced the news of the merger Thursday,
WEC – UFC merger -- World Extreme Cagefighting, an event with humble beginnings as an entertainment program for an Indian reservation casino in California, will join the MMA's World Series when it merges with the UFC in 2011. -- Over the past decade, the WEC has succeeded in spotlighting lighter weight fighters as well as the creating of stars such as Urijah Faber, Jose Aldo and Miguel Torres, whom otherwise might not have received the same amount of recognition. The WEC was set up by Scott Adams and Reed Harris and the first event was headlined by Dan Severn vs. Travis Fulton. Leonard Garcia, who has stayed with the WEC until the end, is in the second fight of the night and wins by knockout. In the video interview below, Dana White confirmed that the merger will take place in January 2011. In addition, White said that four UFC events will air live on Versus in 2011.
