MMA veteran Forrest Petz will get a second crack at competing in the UFC, after agreeing to step in on short notice to face Daniel Roberts at UFC 116, MMA Fighting has learned. Petz is replacing Julio Paulino, who withdrew from the fight for yet-undisclosed reasons. The fight has been verbally agreed to, though Petz has yet to sign a formal bout agreement, according to sources close to the fight.
DREAM Executive Producer Keiichi Sasahara unveiled two more fights for DREAM.15, the card of "Fated Rivals" on Thursday. Along with the highly anticipated Shinya Aoki vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri title match, former top lightweight Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante will look to get back on track against a rising star in Katsunori Kikuno and Melvin Manhoef will return to the ring against a Tatsuya Mizuno as part of DREAM's four-man, light heavyweight tournament.
Also participating in the tournament will be former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi although an opponent has not yet been named.
Strikeforce - Results: Babalu Vs. Robbie Lawler
195 lbs.: Renato "Babalu" Sobral def. Robbie Lawler via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Strikeforce - A lightweight clash between Strikeforce Champ Gilbert Melendez and Bellator Champ Eddie Alvarez may be on the horizon. Scott Coker appears to be very open to the challenge Bellator FC issued him:
17 June 2010 - It was announced prior to Strikeforce on Wednesday night that if Renato "Babalu" Sobral defeated Robbie Lawler, he would get a shot at the light heavyweight title. The only problem with that is Babalu is close friends with and a training partner of current champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal.
MMA legalized in NY – 17 June The Wall Street Journal reports that a bill legalizing and regulating MMA in the state of New York has passed the Senate. It only needs to pass through the Assembly and then be signed by the governor before the bill can become a law.
The Senate passed the MMA bill 32-26. The hope is that a major MMA event can happen in New York City at the Madison Square Garden by this fall, but as the UFC's calendar fills up, it might be difficult to get an event up with a marquee headliner under those deadlines.
As of today, the UFC has rumored events in Indianapolis in September and a London event in October. They have also mentioned heading back to Germany.
