Former WBC Super Middleweight Champion, Robin ‘The Grim Reaper’ Reid, Maltese boxers, local promoters Attard & Harding, World Boxing Federation president,Howard Goldberg and Malta Boxing Commission president, Alexander Zammit, attended the recently held press conferences at the ‘Grand Excelsior Hotel’ in Floriana, Malta.
The occasion for the conference was the media launch of “Rumble On The Rock” a professional boxing night to be held at Ta’ Qali (Limits of Rabat) on the 17th August, 2012.
Justin Attard for local promoters Attard and Harding opened the conference by thanking all those who had attended; pointing out that this was Malta’s first true professional boxing show. Mr. Attard announced that this event would be a double headliner as Robin Reid from England would be taking on South Africa’s current Super Middleweight Champion, William Gare for the WBF World Super Middleweight title and UK’s Tony Dodson would take on a TBA opponent for the WBF light heavyweight intercontinental title.
WBF President Howard Goldberg said that he had been impressed by the level of preparations carried out by the local promoters and also wished to thank the local boxing commission for its cooperation in making the event possible. Speaking on the main title, the WBF president said that this would be a good fight. He was sure that the boxers would give a good show as both want to prove that they still have what it takes to participate at this high level.
Promoter Fran Harding, said: that putting this show together was a pleasure and that he was happy to be on the Island and that there was a future for top quality boxing shows locally.
Former WBC champion Robin Reid spoke about his carrier and said that it was an honour to be once again entering the ring to fight for a world title; he was confident and sure that he would be taking the title back home with him.
Local professional boxers Daniel Micallef and Clayton Vella both expressed their satisfaction to be fighting in Malta and hoped that this would herald in a new era and that they would be giving the event a hundred percent effort. Asked about their training schedule both local fighters stressed that they are in full preparation and that their effort would bear fruit on the day.
Malta Boxing Commission president, Alexander Zammit said that this was a proud moment and a historic one, as this would be the first true professional boxing show in Malta with all the participants being fully licensed and the show run along international regulations. The local boxing president thanked promoters Attard & Harding for their professionalism and then presented the local promoters with their official promoters’ license. Fran Harding was also presented with his official trainer’s license.
Expectations are already high for this historic boxing event in Malta, with Rumble on the Rock expected to be a sell out as Malta’s well travelled fight fans finally get the opportunity to witness world championship bouts on home soil.
