The Malta Boxing Federation will be organizing a local boxing competition on the eight of December at the Bugibba Hotel. This competition will serve both as a festive season tournament and as a first warm up to the Malta Boxing National Championships which will be held in April 2011 according to the MBF Facebook links.
This boxing competition is the first federation event in the last two years which will not have the blessing of the world’s ruling body for Olympic Boxing the AIBA, - after the Maltese Federation was removed from the list of member countries and its application to become a full member was flatly refused, early last month at the AIBA congress in Kazakhstan.
Most probably a number of key Maltese boxers will be missing from the line up during this competition, mainly because a number of leading boxers from Malta have moved to greener pastures and joined clubs of the English Amateur Boxing Association and are now competing in Great Britain as members of the ABAE.
Due to the world wide ban imposed by the AIBA against Malta no member country of the AIBA may box in or against Malta at any level. Thus those Maltese that joined the ABAE which is an AIBA affiliate will be unable to box again in Malta until AIBA sees fit to lift the world wide ruling and welcome Malta back into its fold. The local federation is giving indications that this problem may be resolved in the coming weeks.
