Hungarian Women Prevail in Dual Match

The Hungarian women's team won the dual match against the Czech squad in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday, February 20. Head coach Zsuzsanna Szuknai had to change the team around at the last minute because of illness and injury but in the end, the eight athletes proved themselves to be winners.

Czech women's boxing has developed a lot in the past few years, as has been exemplified by having won several medals in important tournaments such as the European Championships, the European Union Championships, the Witch Cup and the Ahmet Comert Tournament.

The dual match at the Vasas Sport Hall started with two Czech victories, when the taller Jana Borakova (48kg) defeated Csilla Dobradi and Vladimira Malikova (52kg) beat teenager Judit Hosszu. At this point, the visitor team led 2:0 after the first two bouts.

In the next contests, the Hungarian women athletes competed with great stamina and won with Katalin Ancsin opening the winning series in the flyweight class and talented youth boxer Annamaria Oravecz forging ahead, beating Katerina Jezkova in the featherweight category.

Local athlete Bianka Nagy (69kg) gained the most important victory in the dual match when she defeated the experienced Danuse Dilhofova, 11 years her senior, in a hectic battle. Dilhofova is best known as the only boxer who had a good chance of winning against Irish legend Katie Taylor at the 2008 AIBA Women's World Championships in Ningbo City, China.

Newcomer Zsofia Toth of Hungary was victorious against experienced Tereza Lukesova in one of the new Olympic weight class bouts: lightweight. Talented Mercedesz Pikacs (64kg) clearly won the match against young Vendula Vespalcova and the referee stopped the unequal contest in the first round.

In the last bout of the evening, twice AIBA World Championships bronze medalist Anita Ducza of Hungary won against Lenka Dutkova 3:0 in the 75kg category and the home team celebrated the victory over the Czech Republic with a final score of 6:2.
