Jimenez won the duel for the belt with Nicaraguan, Cores Escobar (23-3-0, 15 KOs), who won a split decision of judges. After 12 rounds, one judge exhibited by 116-112 in favor of Escobar, while the other two, 117-111 in favor of Jimenez. The fight was held June 19 at Mexicali, Mexico.

Jose Luis Castillo: Former double world champion in the lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo beat Roberto Valenzuela. The battle took place at 142 pounds. Castillo declared he will be going after the, Welterweight title.
