Volcano Ash Jitters
Maltese Olympic Boxers are suffering from a slight touch of the jitters however not from their opponents in the ring but from Eyjafjallajökull the Iceland Volcano which threatens to disrupt their plans for traveling to Morocco on the 16th of May to take part in the “Mohamed the sixth boxing cup” which is to be held in Marrakesh between the 17 and 22 of this month.
Haithem Laamouz the newly crowned 64 Kg Maltese champion along with budding boxer Zak Farrugia are continuously checking the internet in between training sessions to monitor the updates on the ash cloud that has disrupted air travel in many parts of North Africa.
The boys will be traveling to Morocco with their English Coach, Mr. Glen Saffer who has trained and coached many ABAE champions some who were later to become great professional boxers and even World Champions, amongst the names of those who have trained under coach Saffer are Herbie Hide, Liam Walsh & Ryan Walsh, Caine Brunning and many others. Coach Saffer is indeed a rare kind of coach who although has receive offers to turn as pro coach has always refused on the bases that nothing in the whole world can beat Olympic boxing for keeping kids of the street and no amount of money can ever replace the satisfaction he gets from helping and coaching youths whether they become great champions or not.
