MBF - Secretary General Resigns

Sources close to the “Malta Boxing Federation” are confirming to “Malta Boxing News” that the newly elected Secretary General of the MBF, Mark James Davis has resigned with effect as of today Monday the 26th of July.

In recent days some local Maltese boxing clubs have contacted Malta Boxing News to inform us of disputes between the new Secretary General and local clubs. It seems that some member clubs of the MBF are still refusing to completely abide by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) rules and regulations.

This problem of Olympic boxing clubs in Malta not abiding by the AIBA rules is not a new problem and has been around since the sixties when Malta first joined the AIBA, under the umbrella of the “Malta Boxing Association” and attitudes did not change when the Malta Boxing Federation was formed in 1980.

The crux of the problem in Maltese Olympic Boxing is simple – all boxing clubs in Malta are commercial entities unsupported by any form of funding. Thus the interests of the club or the club owners may at times vary greatly from that of the MBF.

Athletes who want to reach higher pinnacles need money to developed, long hours of training, proper coaching and constant use of facilities - The majority of the boxing clubs are simply not interested in funding these activities and they look towards the MBF to supply funding – the MBF as many other sport bodies in Malta has no funding except for the pittance that comes in from the membership fees.

Efforts by Malta Boxing News to contact members of the MBF executive - to confirm if the resignation of Marc James Davis has been accepted or not - have not been answered or returned, however it is understood that a handover has already been made over the past weekend.

Marc James Davis was elected as Secretary General in mid May of this year.

The big questions are: Is Malta Boxing Federation rudderless? Who is at the helm of the Maltese Olympic Boxing Body?
