Zahra “the Jet” takes WKN World Kickboxing Title

Daniel “the Jet” Zahra returned back to his winning ways when he defeated Czech, Ladislav Kristufekthe in a 64 kg, WKN World Title fight during the recent ‘Gladiators Night X’ event, held at the Greek Theater, in Ta’Qali, Malta on Saturday the 20th of June.

The Zahra vs. Kristufek bout was a 5 round x 3 minutes professional fight. During the first three rounds the action was dominated with leg techniques and kicks to the head. In the last two rounds the two fighters started using more hand techniques and power punches. Zahra scored points with well executed ‘spinning hook kicks’ which found their mark. In Zahra’s corner trainer Noel Mercieca was assisted by renowned, World Thai Boxing Champion, Osman Yigin.

Keith Azzopardi, of Team Spartans, beat Italian, Gianluca Mazzeo in a K1 match by KO in the first round with a jumping flying knee strike to the head. With this win Azzopardi retained the Gladiators Promotions International Title Belt.

Brandon “Boġon” Borg, Team Spartans, also retained the Gladiators Promotions International Title Belt in his category. Borg took on Ivan Naccari from Italy in a K1 match. The bout was balanced but Borg seemed to be more effective with his knee strikes. Borg won this encounter on a split decision.

Melvin Fenech, sporting Team Noel colours, faced Ryan Cachia, from New Kickboxing club, in a K1 match for the WKN National Title Belt. Both fighters showed heart and gave their utmost till the final bell. Victory went to Fenech by a narrow decision.

South African veteran William Gare will meet former WBC super-middleweight champion Robin Reid for the vacant World Boxing Federation title next month.

The fight is scheduled to take place in an open-air arena in Ta’Qali, Malta, on August 17 – possibly the country’s first “world” title bout.

Reid, a veteran from England, has a professional record of 42-7-1, with 29 knockouts. He won the WBC belt in October 1996 and made his first defence against a South African, Giovanni Pretorius.

He also lost it to a South African. Thulani “Sugarboy” Malinga beat him on points in London in December 1997.

Details of the tournament have been announced by Howard Goldberg, who has done much to regenerate the organisation since taking over as WBF president.

On the undercard, Tony Dodson a former British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion – he has a record of 28-7-1; 14 – will fight for the vacant WBF International light-heavyweight title. The name of his opponent still has to be announced.

Gare, who is 37 years old, has won 26 and lost 14 of his 41 fights. He drew one and stopped only four of his opponents.

He has held the WBF super-middleweight and WBC international and SA light-middleweight titles.
