Boxing News in Brief: Friday July 15th 2011, for: Canelo Alvarez vs Alfonso Gomez, Kaliesha West joins HG Boxing, Escobedo vs Hernandex – July 16, Zab Judah vs Amir Khan – July 23, Chisora vs Fury – July 23, Wach and Bride – July 29
- Canelo Alvarez vs Alfonso Gomez
According to Alfonso Gomez himself (via his Facebook page) and Boxrec.com, it will be the former “Contender” star who will be the next challenger for WBA 154-pound champ Saul Alvarez. The date being spoken of is September 17th; the venue The Staples Centre in L.A. September 17th is of course the night superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior will return to the ring, against reigning WBC welterweight ruler Victor Ortiz, and there has been talk of both cards being available to fans on a Pay-Per-View basis. With Erik Morales also fighting on the Mayweather-Ortiz “Star Power” card (against Britain’s Anthony Crolla), it will be some night if fans get to see all three big fights. (James Slater)
- Wach and Bride – July 29
During Thursday’s press conference in Boston’s “The GreatestBar,”, undefeated 6’8 heavyweight contender Mariusz Wach faced his biggest foe when he met 6’6 Kevin “The Clones Colossus” McBride for the first time. Both of them will meet again – for real this time – on July 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The 10-round heavyweight fight for the WBC International title will be the co-featured bout in “Heat Wave,” which is presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports and Global Boxing.
- Escobedo vs Hernandex – July 16
In an IBF featherweight elimination bout, Mexico City’s Eduardo “Canilla” Escobedo (31-3, 22KOs) will once again face Joksan “Torito” Hernandez (22-3, 14KOs) of Ensenada, Mex, on Saturday night from the Olympic Coliseum located at the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mex. The twelve round main event headlines the “Puños de Hierro (Fists of Steel)” fight card presented by HG Boxing. The contest will mark the two Mexican warriors face each other. The first time back in January of 2010, Escobedo was awarded a unanimous decision over the always tough Hernandez with scores of 97-93, 97-92 and 96-93.
- Zab Judah vs Amir Khan – July 23
IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) expects his huge experience and skill advantage to be too much for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) in their important unification clash on July 23. Judah acknowledges that the 24-year-old Khan is a very skilled fighter with fast hands. However, Judah sees himself as having superior skills and Khan to be to inexperienced to be able to handle in this fight.
- Chisora vs Fury – July 23
British and Commonwealth heavyweight Champion Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora (14-0, 9 KOs) puts his belts on the line Saturday night, July 23 against undefeated challenger Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KOs) in the 12-round main event at Wembley Arena in London.
- Kaliesha West joins HG Boxing
WBO bantamweight champion Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West (13-1-3, 4 KOs) has signed with Hector Garcia of HG Boxing. She will make her debut with HG Boxing on August 20th in the semi-main event which is headlined by former WBA super featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado battling mandatory challenger Argenis Mendez for the vacant IBF super featherweight title.

“200: Celebrate and Dominate” Mosley vs. Mora
Kaliesha West will return home to fight in Southern California on Saturday, September 18 to face South Carolina’s Angel Gladney for the vacant WBO Bantamweight World Title on the off-television portion of the “200: Celebrate and Dominate” Mosley vs. Mora undercard at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

Ricky Hatton – no comeback.
Former world champion Ricky Hatton has told BBC Radio Manchester that he will probably never fight again. “You can never say never, but if I was to put my last pound on it I would say ‘no, I think that’s me done,’” he said. “…I’ve been retired, if that’s what you can call it, for 16 months. I announced I was going to make a comeback and I came back off holiday and went into a training camp for three or four weeks, but it just wasn’t the same.” He added that he’s renewed his boxing license just in case he changes his mind.

Former world heavyweight challenger Kali “Checkmate” Meehan (36-4, 29 KOs) outpointed Evans “The Sandman” Quinn (18-5-1, 16 KOs) over twelve rounds to capture the IBF Pan Pacific title on Thursday at the La Montage Reception Center, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
Australian featherweight champion “Aussie” Joel Brunker (16-0, 10 KOs) was impressive in stopping Indonesian Carlos Lopez (20-7, 7 KOs) in two rounds to capture the vacant WBO Youth title.
IBF #4 featherweight Billy Dib (28-1, 16 KOs) scored a stoppage over courageous import Ceferino Lambarda (19-2, 7 KOs) when the towel came into the ring at the start of the sixth round from Lambarda’s corner.
Former 2004 Athens Olympian Adam Forsyth (9-0, 8 KOs) forced a fourth round stoppage over American Chris “Cold Steel” Thomas (17-13-2, 14 KOs) in a scheduled eight round bout.
Former world water skiing champion and model Lauryn Eagle (1-0, 1 KO) made a successful professional debut at welterweight and stopped prison guard Kay Hodgson (0-2) in round one. .

Dmitriy Salita defeats Franklin Gonzalez.
Former world title challenger Dmitriy Salita (31-1-1, 16 KOs) pounded out an eight round unanimous decision over Franklin Gonzalez (13-6, 9 KOs) on Wednesday night at the Oceana Hall in Brooklyn, New York. Salita showed no effects from his blowout loss to Amir Khan in December.

Andre Berto Vs Selcuk Aydin in the works.
A welterweight showdown between unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KO’s) and unbeaten welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin (20-0, 15 KO’s) could take place on the undercard of the lightweight championship match-up between WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez vs. WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis on November 27th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the fight is in the works. Also, WBA bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero could also be on the card against a still to be determined opponent.

The World Boxing Council is announcing that in its next ratings it will grant #1 rated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. the status of official challenger of WBC middleweight world champion Sergio Martinez. The bout will take place after the next voluntary defense of Martinez, a fight that has already been scheduled.

Former world boxing champion heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev has agreed to a major role in the film “Strange Wilderness.” According to the radio station “Mayak”, shooting will begin this week in St. Petersburg.

Bob Arum’s still missing.
Bob Arum’s 49 year old lawyer son John Arum is still missing – John a well known environmentalist and experienced mountain climber was reported missing on Monday by family members.
His 78 year old father abandoned the Antonio Margarito-Manny Pacquia media tour after the first stop in Beverly Hills on Tueday. Arum and his wife Lovee, who is Arum’s third wife and not John’s mother, jetted off to Seattle to meet up with air and ground search teams in North Cascades National Park.
Now, on Wednesday, searchers have located and identified a day or “fanny” pack belonging to Arum. Four helicopters, two with infrared capabilities for detecting body heat, have been added to the search.
