Murray Forced Out Of Chavez Jr Fight

alt

MARTIN MURRAY has been forced to withdraw from his WBC world middleweight title challenge against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr because he cannot obtain a visa in time that would allow him to enter the United States.

The British, Commonwealth and WBA inter-continental champion was lined up to challenge the Mexican in El Paso, Texas on Saturday 16th June.

Murray spent time in prison when he was younger and has turned his life around in recent years. However, his past has meant a delay in getting the necessary visa.

Despite being a model citizen these days he cannot get the paperwork rubber stamped in time for a US and Mexican press tour later this month and the fight is now off.

Family man Murray, 29, said: “I’d signed the contract and everything was agreed so to be told I cannot box Chavez Jr because of my past is gut-wrenching.

“As a human being, I couldn’t have done any more to turn my life around over the last seven years.

“I have a fantastic wife, Gemma. We two wonderful children Archie and Amelia. They are my life and everything I do is for them.”

Devastated Martin hopes his ill-fortune will be a lesson to youngsters who could be falling on the wrong side of the law.

He added: “I am a qualified youth worker and spend lot of time working with kids making an effort to help keep them out of trouble.

“I am pleading with the youth of today not to make the same mistakes I did when I was young.

“Even if you change your life around it can still come back to bite you.”

Murray, his manager Neil Marsh and Hatton Promotions will still try and get the popular boxer a visa to enter the United States in the future.

Until then he will concentrate on defending his titles and hopes to add another Lonsdale belt notch this summer.

Murray’s only blemish in 24 fights is a draw against WBA super champion Felix Sturm in December where he proved himself as a world class fighter.

He said: “I would like to thank my team, Hatton Promotions for all their efforts and I have every faith in them.

“I would also like to thank Bob Arum and everybody at Top Rank for trying to put the Chavez Jr fight together and hope it can still happen at a later date.”

Promoter Ricky Hatton said: “This is a sledgehammer blow for Martin and his team, but everyone at Hatton Promotions will work to get him another world title fight.”

JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. Popped for DUI

Middleweight boxing champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. — son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez — has been arrested for DUI, TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, Julio was pulled over in his black Land Rover for a routine traffic stop last weekend on an L.A. freeway — and when officers approached the vehicle, they detected a strong odor of alcohol.

The officers administered several field sobriety tests — and we’re told Julio’s reflexes weren’t quit up to par, so they placed him under arrest.

Julio was subsequently booked for DUI. Calls to Julio’s people were not returned.

HBO’s hit late-night boxing franchise presents a middleweight title showdown when HBO BOXING AFTER DARK:

SEBASTIAN ZBIK VS. JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. AND

MIKEY GARCIA VS. RAFAEL GUZMAN

is seen SATURDAY, JUNE 4 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT), from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team of Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

From Schwerin, Germany, middleweight titleholder Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KOs), 29, is making both his U.S. and HBO debut in this scheduled 12-round bout. A native of Culiacan, Mexico, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KOs), 25, is the son of Julio Cesar Chavez, perhaps Mexico’s greatest fighter, who fashioned a brilliant career with 115 pro fights from 1980 to 2005. The younger Chavez, who is also making his first appearance on HBO, previously fought at Staples Center in 2005 and is counting on a strong home-crowd advantage.

The previously announced fight between Mikey Garcia and Miguel Beltran, Jr. has been cancelled due to injury. The opening bout now features the 23-year-old Garcia (25-0, 21 KOs), a fast-rising featherweight from Oxnard, Cal., versus 25-year-old Rafael Guzman (28-2, 20 KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico. This 126-pound tilt is scheduled for ten rounds. Garcia returns to HBO after his impressive win in March over Matt Remillard in Atlantic City.

Chavez Jr. calls out Oscar de la Hoya

alt

Oscar de la Hoya recently wrote on his twitter account: “I was watching Chavez Jr. last night and I’m sorry but he just does not have it. There’s no pop in his punches, but wish him the best.”

WBC #1 middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s response was: “I’m surprised that De La Hoya could see two fights at the same time, mine and Bradley-Alexander, but I am grateful to have contributed to having broken the record audience on Fox Sports who tuned into my fight”

Junior stated that he recalls that when Oscar was an up-and-coming fighter that neither he nor his father criticized Oscar when an opponent named “Chicho” Valenzuela sent him to the canvas, “Nor did we criticize the knockout loss to Hopkins, who after the fight became a partner of Oscar’s company, let alone when he stayed on his stool when he faced Manny Pacquiao.”

JC Chavez Jr also issued his own challenge to the Golden Boy: “I call on Oscar de la Hoya to pick up the gloves and face me at middleweight in September and give more motivation to de la Hoya I’ll bet my purse that I send him back into permament retirement from boxing and I wish him the best in his career as a promoter.”

Roach Enjoys Culiacan, Mexico

Top boxing trainer Freddie Roach has found a new home in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico where he has been for the past two weeks preparing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for his next fight. “I have found this to be a very great experience. I did not know what to expect but it was been great. The people are very nice and to my surprise they know who I am. I thought the only other place as was known outside of the US was the Philippines,” said Roach with a smile. Roach is getting Chavez Jr. the January 29 fight against Billy Lyell, that will take place in the Banorte Soccer Stadium in Culiacan.

“People come up to me and ask me to take care of Julio and get him ready to fight for a championship. They ask for my autograph and take pictures with me. This people are very hospitable,” said Roach, who loves the food and has made some trips to nearby beaches in Mazatlan and Tata.

“I just love their sea food and I have even begun to eat their hot salsa and I also like the Mexican Banda music that is so popular here, it has a very unique sound with all the instruments they play with,” said Roach.

But Roach has also worked very hard with Chavez Jr. during his stay in Culiacan and was more than happy with the facilities.

“We everything we need here and Julio is working very hard. He will be ready for the fight and for Billy Lyell,” added Roach.
