Dawson Wants Title Shot

Former World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Heavyweight Champion “Bad” Chad Dawson congratulated Bernard Hopkins for his record-breaking victory last Saturday night against Jean Pascal. With his unanimous decision, Hopkins became the oldest fighter to ever win a world title.
Hopkins now has the obligation to face Dawson in his first defense because it was Dawson who stepped aside to allow a rematch of the controversial Pascal-Hopkins draw first, in exchange for an appearance on the show’s undercard bout and the right to face the winner.
Dawson defeated fellow former champ Adrian Diaconu in the main supporting bout that night, keeping his end of the bargain he struck with the main event fighters’ camps.
Unfortunately, one of the first messages to come from new champion Hopkins’ camp came when promoter Richard Schaefer told ESPN he would “look for contract loopholes” that would allow Hopkins to fight someone other than Dawson.
“Bernard, I’m sure you would agree I allowed your fight to happen. You said at the press conference I was next. I know that besides being a great champion, you’re also a person of your word, so I look forward to facing you later this year,” said Dawson.
Dawson’s promoter, Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions, echoes Dawson’s sentiments. “Bernard, congratulations on the wave of good will you are currently riding. You deserve it. I know you’ll do the right thing and keep your word against Chad. We are looking forward to a terrific fight.”

The bout will take place at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on the 21st of May. - David Tua and Kali Meehan in Negotiations
Theage.com.au has reported that Australian heavyweight Kali Meehan, now aged 41, has begun negotiating for a year-end clash with New Zealand powerhouse David Tua, who at age 38 is a few years younger than Meehan, also has the option of facing Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett in the summer; with the return fight being one Tua wants after the shock draw he fought to with the New Yorker last July.
- Arce coming to Puerto Rico
WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel said yesterday that he will invite new champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce to Puerto Rico to get his belt and pay tribute to the fighter to become the first Mexican boxer with world titles in four different weight divisions (counting interim titles). “We are coordinating the date for bringing Arce to Puerto Rico for giving him his super bantamweight belt and also giving him a diamond ring for his three WBO titles,” Valcarcel said about the three WBO crowns Arce won at 108, 115 and 122 pounds. Arce (57-6-2, 44 KOs) won the WBO 122lb title last Saturday when he beat by TKO Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-1-1, 17 KOs) in round 12. His other belt was the WBC interim 112lb title.
- Witter on next Prizefighter
Junior Witter and Colin Lynes head the bill for the Prizefighter Welterweights II at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Tuesday June 7 – the final Prizefighter of the season. Former WBC light welterweight champion Witter could face Lynes at the same venue that they met in 2005 when Sheffield’s Witter successfully defended his Commonwealth, European and British titles against Londoner Lynes. Witter won his WBC crown in 2006 against DeMarcus Corley and defended it twice the following year before Timothy Bradley took it from him through a split decision in 2008. There’s a chance for double retribution for former IBO World, British and European champ Lynes, with that score to settle against ‘The Hitter’ as well as one with Prizefighter, after he lost the Light-Welterweights final to Gavin Rees in December 2009. Former British champion Kevin McIntyre, unbeaten prospects John Wayne Hibbert and Bobby Gladman, Yassine El Maachi, Peter McDonagh and Nathan Graham complete the line-up for the 19th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments.
- Haye trash talks Wladimir
WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) and IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) met on Monday in a press conference in Hamburg, Germany at the Imtech Arena, the site where the two fighters will be battling on July 2nd. Haye, 30, refused to shake Wladimir’s hand during the meeting and continued with his war of words aimed at angering the 6’6″ Ukrainian. As usual, Wladimir has opted to not trash talk – Wladimir said “I really respect you and you are a fantastic fighter with an impressive record. I believe it will be a pretty good lesson in respect on July 2nd.”

Boxing Talk With Tavoris Cloud
.
By Daniel Ciminera
Speaking to Tavoris Cloud today, he indicated he’d be fighting “real soon, possibly March/April”, though didn’t give much away with regards to who, naming Chad Dawson, Jean Pascal, Bernard Hopkns, Beibut Shumenov, and Jurgen Braehmer as possible candidates. Which is basically the top 5 ranked guys without him and Nathan Cleverly included. As generic an answer as is possible, almost.
We can pretty safely rule out Brahmer who has a mandatory defence to make against Nathan Cleverly, the interim WBO title holder, who was interestingly left out from Cloud’s shortlist. When I asked him “what if Cleverly beats Braehmer?”, he wryly responded with “we’ll see” indicating he does not think that Cleverly can beat Braehmer or that he knows something we do not about the Braehmer/Cleverly clash. He also said he wants to unify the WBO title “this year” so we can assume that Braehmer or Cleverly are definitely on the cards in 2011.
We can also probably rule out Dawson for March/April after suffering his first career loss at the hands of Jean Pascal last summer. A well rested, and eager to get back on winning ways Dawson would be a very dangerous fight for anyone in the division to take. I can’t see the young Cloud taking this fight.
This leaves WBA and IBA title holder Shumenov, off the back of a 6th round KO versus experienced William Joppy, also a dangerous proposition, but with high reward in terms of title unifications. More so than fighting either Pascal or Hopkins who drew with each other last month. Pascal put an end to Dawson’s unbeaten run in 2010 and in gaining a draw with the ever-wiley Bernard Hopkins has cemented himself among the top light-heavyweights, and as we all know, Hopkins can make anybody look bad.
So for me, of these three, Shumenov is the only one worth going after right now in terms of “risk v reward” at least anyway, with a winter bout with the winner of Braehmer v Cleverly for a massive unification bout which would likely be one of the best fights of the year. And would be another shining-light example of top boxers not avoiding each other for the sake of it!

Will there be a Pascal – Hopkins Rematch?
Will there be a Pascal Hopkins rematch?

WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KO’s) and Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO’s) fought to a 12 round majority draw at the Pepsi Colisseum, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The scores were 114-112 Hopkins, 113-113, 114-114. This was a fight where neither fighter could really be happy with their performance. While Hopkins obviously finished strong in the second part of the fight and was able to salvage a draw out of it, there’s no escaping the fact that Hopkins was knocked down twice in the fight.
Bernard Hopkins wants an immediate remath with Jean Pascal after failing in his bid to become the oldest boxer to hold a major world title. The fight ended in a technical draw despite being floored by the champion in the first and third rounds.
Hopkins fought back to knock Pascal down in the eleventh round but at the end two judges scored it even with the third backing Hopkins. so Pascal kept the WBC and IBO belts.
“This was a robbery. I took him to school.” said Hopkins.
“I believe I won the fight,” said Pascal. “It wasn’t my best fight, but Bernard fights ugly and dirty. He’s a tough guy to box.
“I’m the champion, I like to win, not draw. If he wants a rematch, he can have one any time.”
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer: said “It’s really a shame, it’s a shame for Canada, it’s a shame for boxing to have a decision like that. We had Canadian people, Canadian fans come up to us and tell us he (Hopkins) won. That is what is wrong with boxing. He sure didn’t lose, I think if you think that, you don’t know what boxing means. Look at the scorecards; it happens all the time up here that is what is wrong with boxing. It’s a disgrace. We are going to file a protest. The WBC will order an immediate rematch and we will see what other legal remedies we have because this is wrong. This is wrong.
Fittingly, there was no real winner in the fight, as it ended in a 12 round majority draw, however the vast majority of boxing fans and scribes seem to favour Hopkins as being the better fighter and bad judging attributed to the result. A rematch would seem to be the logical conclusion.
