The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has named its best boxers, coaches and officials for 2010.

Artur Beterbiev from Russia and Katie Taylor from Ireland have been named the best elite boxers of 2010 by the International Boxing Association, with Azerbaijan’s Shaban Shahpalangov scooping the prize for best youth boxer. The boxers and the best coach and officials will receive their awards at a special ceremony during the forthcoming AIBA Congress in Almaty, Kazakhstan on November 2nd.

The 25-year-old Artur Beterbiev from Magnitogorsk in the Russian Federation is reigning World and European Champion. He eliminated France’s Abdelkader Bouhenia by RSC in the first round of this year’s 81kg European final in front of the Moscow crowd before the Frenchman had chance to score.

Beterbiev also won the 2008 AIBA World Cup in front of the home crowd in Moscow, beating Abbos Atoev from Uzbekistan, who had beaten him to the world title in the previous year. At the 2009 AIBA World Championships, Beterbiev edged ahead in a close final to defeat another Uzbek opponent, Elshod Rasulov, en route to the light heavyweight world title.

Ireland’s Katie Taylor picks up the AIBA best boxer award for the second time in two years. Taylor beat China’s Cheng Dong at the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Championships in Barbados last month to claim her third consecutive world lightweight title. Her gold medal victory was her 100th victory from 106 bouts since 2001.

Shaban Shahplangov of Azerbaijan picks up the award for best youth boxer after taking the youth world flyweight title on home soil at the AIBA Youth World Championships in Baku in April. This qualified him for the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August, where he failed to make the medals table.

In other awards, AIBA recognized the best coach as Chuanliang Zhang of China, the best Technical Delegate as Terry Smith (recently elected Chairman of the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association), the best ITO (International Technical Official) as Mr Adam Kusior from Poland, the best referee and judge as Mr Rakhymzhan Rysbayev from Kazakhstan and the best licensee as Budoland / Top Ten.

King Vs Wu For AIBA Control Continues

King locks horns with Wu in supremacy battle for control of the AIBA

The battle of supremacy for the leadership of the “International Boxing Association” AIBA continues and becomes nastier by the day.

Paul King CEO for the ABAE seems to be leading the pack against AIBA incumbent President Dr. Ching Kuo Wu.

However the English boxing chief has failed to be nominated after only being able to garner ten of the required twenty nominations. King is claiming in articles published on “insidethegames.biz” that this is a result of many countries having been suspended unfairly by the AIBA.

The implication of King’s statement it seems – is that AIBA or WU has eliminated the opposition by suspending them and making them illegible for the congress which is due to be held on the 2nd November in Kazakhstan.

Yesterday a terse statement issued by AIBA headquarters in Lausanne, stated that its election committee had “concluded that there was only one eligible candidate for the AIBA Presidency”.

Dr. Wu

However, with just under a month still to go before the AIBA Congress a challenge to Wu can still not be completely ruled out.

According to insidethegames there is the strong possibility of a legal challenge to be lodged with a Swiss civil court in the coming days on behalf of a number of national associations who consider themselves to have been unfairly suspended by AIBA.

King claims that “more than 70″ national boxing federations had not been sent paperwork for the Congress.

If King’s claims are correct and assuming that these countries will all join the legal challenge than there is the possibility of success for this group, this could lead to the reopening of the nomination process allowing more countries to participate.

Late last month in a letter to national member federations, AIBA Director Ho Kim stated that the decision “not to allow any national federation with non-payment on set deadline of membership fees…to attend the 2010 AIBA Congress was made by the AIBA executive committee” in July in Marrakech.

The questions that beg to be asked is – are all the un-invited nations suspended because of non payment of the yearly affiliation fee to AIBA?

Considering that the affiliation fee of the AIBA is a symbolic – 250 US Dollars a year.

If a number of national boxing federations have failed to pay this symbolic amount due to financial problems – how are they going to afford their share of a class action suit in a Swiss court?

Thailand Boxing Federation and President Suspended

In a statement issued by the AIBA on the 29 of September -2010

Due to continuous violations of AIBA’s Ethics and Disciplinary Codes by sending an email to AIBA National Member Federations encouraging them to use fake Congress forms, which clearly represents an attempt to challenge the election procedure approved by the AIBA Executive Committee, the AIBA Executive Committee Bureau has decided on September 27 to provisionally suspend Gen. Taweep Jantararoj as President of the  Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand from any AIBA activities including his status as an AIBA EC member, to provisionally suspend the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand with immediate effect and to put this case for review and decision by the AIBA Disciplinary Commission.
