Maltese Kickboxer In A Savate Competition

alt

By Reuben Azzopardi

In March (2012) Daniel “the Jet” Zahra took part in a Savate competition but unfortunately lost by a few points against his French competitor.

This was the second Professional match for “the Jet” but his first one with Savate rules. In fact he is the first Maltese Kickboxer that ever took part in a competition of such discipline. On the other hand the French athlete, (Debon) has an experience of about 90 matches in Savate, K1 and Kickboxing.

Savate is a French Martial Art which is also known as French Kickboxing. This sport was originally created by French sailors in case they had to defend themselves while at sea. This style varies from Kickboxing due to the fact that it allows kicks to the front of the legs and the use of special shoes which have reinforced toes.

It was a balanced match throughout the 5 rounds with continuous attacks and counter attacks from both fighters. In the first round Debon went with a calm technique and studied the Maltese competitor and managed to knock him down but not out. Zahra controlled the second round with his classical jumping and spinning kicks and managed to keep ahead and controlled the whole round.

It was in the third and fourth round that Debon started to gain points and putting pressure on Zahra. In the fifth and final round the Savate practitioner showed his experience by putting Zahra on the defensive. Zahra and his coach, Master Noel Mercieca, had only one month to practice the techniques for such a different discipline. In the end the judges gave the victory to Debon only by a few points.

alt

Currently talks or on the way so that later this year Debon would face Zahra again . But this time it will be under K1 rules competition in Malta. On another note, next month Christopher Debono, another member of the Ying Yang Kickboxing and student of Master Mercieca, will take part in a Boxing competition.

This fight will take place in Tours, FRANCE on Saturday 17th of March

alt

Buakaw Por Pramuk and Fabio Pinca are currently in the world’s top ten ranked Muay Thai fighters.

Buakaw Por Pramuk has already won the K-1 World Max 2 times (2004, 2006) and the Thai Championship in 2011. He is considered by many Muay Thai specialists as one of the best fighters in the last ten years

alt

Fabio Pinca took the WBC Muay Thai, world title in 2009 and also took the Isuzu Thai Fight Tournament Champion in 2010

Promoter El Hadj MEKEDEM has organized more than 20 events with many other great fighters.
Before this event, he wondered what fight he could bring to the Muay Thai Fans.

“Last year when BUAKAW was in my event we were sold out two weeks before the event! I know that this time it will be the same. That is why i decide to work with MUAYTHAITV to set up a live internet broadcast for the event to the entire world. Thus the whole Muay Thai community will be able to watch this explosive bout” said Mekedem.

The two fighters agreed to fight below 68 kg (150 lbs) but Nasser KACEM, Fabio PINCA’s coach has demanded weigh-in on the morning of the fight. Thus ensuring that the two fighters will both be at the same weight, for the fight.

BUAKAW said: “Fabio is certainly one of the best Muay Thai Fighters on earth now, he defeated many thai fighters, he defeated by KO the Lumpinee champion BUT … whatever he can do, as long as i am in Muay Thai the best ranking he can get is 2nd!
I’m very excited about this fight. I know that it will be broadcast live on internet all around the world and i will show my skills to all my fans”.

FABIO knows what Buakaw said, He replied saying: “I’m self confident, the best answer i can give will be the one in the ring”.

We should not conclude that Fabio is an outsider before the fight, he is always very quiet and he likes this kind of challenge. He has a superb punch and he knows that if he is able to connect with his target the fight is over. He has demonstrated many times in the past that he performs best in difficult situations.

We understood that the situation is not far from 50/50…

Before this main event you will also see a 4-men tournament with:
• Mickael PISCITELLO (France)
• Fares BECHAR (Algeria)
• SUPER X (Thailand)
• Birth KHAM (Cambodia)

Also a prestige fight:
PAJONSUK (Thailand) VS ELAKAIDAIR (France)

The Live Internet Streaming will start on Saturday 17th of March at 08:00pm French time (07:00pm GMT). For further information go to: http://live.muaythaitv.com

Malta’s Daniel Zahra For Savate Competition

Daniel “The Jet” Zahra To Participate In  A Savate Competition

alt

On the 16th of March Daniel “the Jet” Zahra will once again represent Malta in a professional Martial Arts match. This time he will compete against a Savate practitioner from Marseille.

Together with his instructor, Master Noel Mercieca, Zarha will go to France to compete in a professional full contact match of 5 rounds of 2 minutes each. His adversary in Marseille will be Laurient Debon. The rules for this fight will be those of Savate which include the normal full contact Kickboxing rules and the use of special boots used in this discipline.

Savate is a French Martial Art which is also known as French Kickboxing. This sport was originally created by French sailors in case they had to defend themselves while at sea. This style varies from Kickboxing due to the fact that it allows kicks to the front of the legs and the use of special shoes which have reinforced toes.

This it is the first time that a Maltese Kickboxer will compete in this discipline. For Zahra this will be his second professional match after he won the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) European Kickboxing Title Belt last December.

Master Mercieca together with Sensei Charlo Spiteri started giving Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) classes at the Ying Yang Kickboxing club. Sensei Spiteri is aMMA practitioner who trained under Roger Gracie in the UK. For more information go to www.yingyangkickboxing.com or contact Master Noel Mercieca on 79208283 or merciecanoel@yahoo.co.uk
