London (15th July 2011) RORY McIlroy has the golfing world at his feet and another 22-year-old Irishman, Tyson Fury believes he can do the same in the ring over the next 12 months.

Fury watched on with great admiration as McIlroy burned up the field before winning the US Open and now he is hoping to win back to back majors with glory at the Open Championship at Sandwich.

Manchester-born Fury challenges Dereck Chisora for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles on July 23 at Wembley Arena and says this is the start of him becoming a major sporting star.

Fury said: “Rory McIlroy is an inspiration to every young sports man and woman and I’m no different. Rory brings a lot of charisma and natural talent to the golf course and I bring the same to the ring. The way he won the US Open was awesome.

“After the fall of Tiger Woods Rory came in and gave golf the lift it needed and now I plan to do the same. British boxing needs a new star, it needs a new heavyweight star to replace David Haye and I’m the man to bring a breath of fresh air to the division.

“Like Rory I want to show the world how good I am and that starts with victory over Chisora. The division needs someone like me, someone who can back up what he says in the ring.

“I know that Rory likes his boxing and I hope he can be at ringside for my fight with Chisora. I know he went to watch Haye’s awful performance against Wladimir Klitschko, well he should come to Wembley Arena and watch a real heavyweight ding dong.

“And I hope he is able to bring along the Open trophy with him to show it off, it would be great to see him win again.”

The fight that every fight fan had been waiting for Wladimir Klitschko vs David Haye did not turn out to be the sort of memorable match that was anticipated or hoped for

Basically while IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Dr. Steelhammer did not quite overrun the Hayemaker, it still was pretty much a one sided affair

In round one, Haye threw lots of power punches but didn’t connect. In round 2 Klitschko connected with some jabs but nothing hard. Both landed a few shots in round three and there was promise of better thing to come. Haye landed a clean shot at the bell to end round four. In round five Haye went for single shots and Klitschko got in with a good combination. In round six Klitschko stepped up the action and seemed to be in control. In round eightKlitschko was deducted a point for pushing down and referee Geno Rodriguez gave Haye a count after he went down in the eleventh. In the last round Haye got in with a hard shot but Klitschko fought back.

The final scores were 117-109, 118-108, 116-110.

In post fight comments; Haye attributed his poor performance to a broken toe that he says he suffered in training three weeks ago.

Klitschko commenting about the fight said; “He was very cautious. He was very difficult to hit. Just like Ibragimov. I really didn’t get challenged in the ring offensively. You know, like “let’s fight!” Instead he was fighting all of them…like all of my recent opponents. I would have loved to have celebrated my 50th knockout.”

Haye also said he was “very frustrated” with the way he fought, and credited Klitschko with having the perfect gameplan.

WBO #3/WBA #5/IBF #9/WBC#11 cruiserweight contender Ola Afolabi (17-2-3, 8 KOs) stopped Terry Dunstan (24-4, 14 KOs) in the first round of a clash for the WBO Intercontinental belt.

After the bout, Afolabi said that he’s going to not be as lazy as he was in the past, and said that he hopes for a rematch with titlist Marco Huck. Huck defeated Afolabi in a competitive bout in December 2009 in Germany. (Afolabi (17-2-3, 8 KO) served as a chief sparring partner for Wladimir Klitschko for today’s big main event).

Unbeaten bantamweight Ashley Sexton (11-0-2, 5 KOs) was held to an eight round draw against Mike Robinson (4-2-2, 0 KOs). Scores were 78-76, 75-77, 76-76.

• Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye

Are set to meet in Hamburg, Germany this Saturday night in one the most eagerly anticipated heavyweight contests in years. In fact, in terms of its significance it is no exaggeration to place this fight up there with the epic contest that took place between Wladimir’s older brother Vitali Klitschko and Britain’s Lennox Lewis back in 2003, when Lewis managed to open up a nasty cut above the giant Ukrainian’s left eye that led to the referee stopping the fight at the start of the seventh round.

• “The Nightmare” Martirosyan

Undefeated junior middleweight Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (30-0, 19KO’s) is looking to secure a major fight this fall. The WBC’s top rated 154-pounder had his sights set on a Mexican Independence Day show down with Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez but that might not come to fruition any time soon. “Canelo and I would be a big fight at STAPLES Center. The place would be full of Mexican and Armenian fans. His style and my style go together perfectly and would give the fans the fight that they want to see,” said Martirosyan. Indications are that Alvarez will not face the Glendale, California, based fighter this year. With that news, Team Martirosyan is moving on and there are plenty of options in the loaded junior middleweight division.

In the VIP room of Cinemex Antara in Polanco, Mexico City, Mexican stars Juan Manuel and Rafael Marquez, accompanied by their trainers Nacho Beristain and Daniel Zaragoza, respectively, made the official announcement of their return to the ring on July 16th in the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Quintana Roo. WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel (52-1, 38 KOs) will face Likar Ramos (24-3, 18 KOs), while Rafael (39-6, 35 KOs) faces a fighter to be named. Juan Manuel is preparing for a November 12 clash with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, while Rafael is getting ready for WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka.

• Pavlik to Face Darryl Cunningham

Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik could be taking no chances of getting beaten in his next fight by taking on 2nd tier fighter Darryl Cunningham (23-2, 10 KO’s) for a tune-up fight on August 6th, according to the latest boxing news. Pavlik was recently almost beaten by Alfonso Lopez in a truly awful fight for Pavlik. He appeared to lose the fight in the minds of many boxing fans, and looked no better than he had in losing to Sergio Martinez last year. Pavlik is hoping to fight International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Lucian Bute later this year in a big money fight.

• July 9 Panama show may be canceled

The boxing card billed as “La Revancha” scheduled on July 9 in the Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City with seven French fighters including WIBA female world champion Anne Sophie Mathis (24-1, 21 KOs) may be cancelled said a confident source. “We’re supposed to fight but due to a problem with the promoter and no financial guarrantee for the French fighters, they won’t go in Panama,” said international French manager Christel Aujoux – Panamanian fighters include former WBA world champion Ricardo Cordoba, Joao Powell, Loel Barrantes, Julio Canastuj, Julio Garcia and former WIBA world champion Ana Pascal who would face French opponents.
