Vella To Fight For MBC International Title

Late last night the committee of the Malta Boxing Council decided to allow Clayton Vella another crack at the Welter-weight, Maltese ‘MBC International Title’. This happened after Valentin Stoychev who won the title last December by stopping Vella in the 5th round failed to defend his title, which has now been declared vacant.
However this chance comes at a price for Vella as he now has to defend his title against the more formidable GBA champion Alexander Menges, who is undefeated.
Daniel Micallef will be taking on the more experienced Marcen Gierke for the MBC international light-weight title. Micallef has been training heavily for this fight and is reported to be in top physical condition. Micallef has had a mixed professional career with ups and downs, his main contention point is the lack of sparing partners of a decent level in Malta.
Italian Pierre Paolo Cardinali who is no stranger to the Maltese Islands will be taking on former WBU champion David Burke in a non title fight over 6 rounds.
Aruona Calibaly will take on Turkish, Ali Kelik in a 4×3. This will be Keklik’s professional debut.
Part of the proceedings from this boxing night will go towards the boxing outreach program for youths at risk that is being launched by MBC president Eva Rolle, later on this year.
This fight night is being promoted by Edwin Micallef of ‘Micallef Promotions’ in partnership with the Bugibba Hotel.
This double header event will be taking place at the ‘Bugibba Hotel’ on the 7th June, 2013. Tickets for the event are available at the door or by pre-booking on 99461751. Read the rest of this entry »

Local Gym Director and boxing coach Edwin Micallef, talks about the “Boxway Fitness Gym” in Valley Road, Birkirkara, Malta.
Edwin is the older sibling of Maltese professional boxer Daniel Micallef. Edwin explains that at the ‘Boxway’ there are three types of boxing activities Amateur Boxing, Professional Boxing & Box-fitness and each section is run by different coaches.
Edwin makes it quite clear that his gym is not a boutique gym,
“The aim of the gym is to produce good quality, amateur & professional athletes, stated the director.”

The next interview was with Clayton “The Punisher” Vella, a promising local boxer who at the moment boxes on the unsanctioned boxing circuit or in white collar boxing events.

Malta’s Micallef Defeats Scotland’s Steel
Malta’s first professional boxer Daniel “The Spider” Micallef (w4 -KO 1 – lost 3) has just convincingly won his seventh professional boxing match by unanimous decision against Chris Steel at the Miners Welfare Club, Cleland, Scotland, UK, on the 9th of December.
Daniel is presently Malta’s one and only true professional, licensed boxer, training full time and striving to advance in the sport, he is the younger sibling of local boxing promoter Edwin Micallef and is managed in Scotland by Paul Graham of ‘Prospect Boxing’.
By outpointing undefeated Chris Steel 60-54 over 6 rounds. Daniel is now ranked 474 in the world, number one in Malta and equivalent to 47th in the Brittish ranks with Craig Windsor Jnr just above him in the ratings.
Daniel Micallef vs. Chris Steel
The first fight on the night saw Scots based Maltese, Daniel Micallef (3-3) take on Motherwell’s Chris Steel (3-1) over six-twos. Starting the fight strongly and always coming forward, Micallef looked to make use of the fact the Steel was the notably taller fighter. As the fight continued Micallef went on to land clearly and showed good command of the ring. At the end of round six, the referee lifted the Maltese fighter’s hand after scoring it 60-54.
Iain Butcher vs. Darren Pryce
This was the second show of the season for the Scottish based promoters (Prospect Boxing). Motherwell’s Iain Butcher, in his second appearance as a professional looked to make quick work of Newport’s Darren Pryce. Starting well, Pryce was out boxed for the rest of the fight and was also warned by ref Kenny Pringle in the second for low blows. Showing good technique mixed with a tight defence throughout the fight, Butcher went on to claim his second victory by 40-36.
Kris Hughes vs. Michael Harvey
And in the third and final fight of the night Kris Hughes moved to 15-1 with a point’s victory over Michael Harvey in the super-bantamweight division. Making a strong start, Hughes seemed to build on his previous points victory over Youssef Al Hamidi, with blistering body shots and never seemed to let Harvey get into the fight. After four-threes, referee Pringle raised Hughes’ hand after scoring it 40-36 to the Bellshill fighter. Hughes now moves on to a Commonwealth title fight against Irishman Carl Frampton at the end of January.
