MAIN EVENTS COMES ON STRONG

WITH 3 QUALITY SHOWS IN ONE MONTH

TOTOWA, NJ – Main Events brings boxing fans a tidal wave of action over the next month with three rapid-fire promotions scheduled for national television audiences. However, merely keeping boxing lovers busy was not the goal of Main Events head Kathy Duva. Committed to making matches that really count, Duva stacked all three shows with appealing fights that really matter in boxing’s big picture.

Kathy Duva said, “It has been a long time since we had such a busy month. There is a lot of excitement in the air at Main Events, lately, and, as a fan, I can’t wait to watch each one of these bouts.”

So get ready for both quality and quantity over the next month.

First up is a card at the Pharr, Texas Convention Center to be televised by Univision on May 19th. Headlining the show is Texas featherweight, Jerry Belmontes, known as “The Corpus Christi Kid”, puts his undefeated, 15-0, 5 KOs, record on the line against Dominican trial horse Ramesis Gil, 7-3-5, 5 KOs. It will be Belmontes’ first time in the ring since last June, and he’ll be hoping a win over Gil will be his ticket to a successful and more active future. The loyal fan base Belmontes built as an all-star amateur, will no doubt be in the house to cheer him on.

Also on the card, is an important heavyweight bout between Odlanier Solis, 17-1, 12 KOs, and Konstantin Airich, 23-5-2, 17 KOs, for the IBF Intercontinental Title. Cuban-born Solis will try to bounce back from his bizarre 2011 loss to WBC champ Vitali Klitschko, and to do so, will have to will have to get past the German-based Airich, who is currently on a six-bout winning streak, the last three by knockout.

Two weeks later, Main Events returns with the latest installment of NBC Sports Network’s “Fight Night” series in partnership with Russell Peltz of Peltz Boxing. Topping the show at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA, is rising junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia, 19-5, 11 KOs. This will be a command performance for Rosado, who so impressed the NBC Sports Network execs in January with his disposal of Jesus Soto Karass on the very first edition of “Fight Night”, that they ordered an extra show in the series just for him. Rosado faces two-time world title challenger Sechew Powell in a 12-round bout for the WBO Intercontinental Jr. Middleweight belt. Powell brings a seasoned 26-4, 15 KOs record, as well as a tricky southpaw style into the fight. Rosado will have his hands full, but another impressive win may position the Philadelphian for a big fight. He is currently ranked #5 by the IBF and #9 by the WBC. Powell is the IBF’s 9th-ranked junior middleweight.

Supporting Rosado-Powell is a 12-round bout between Bethlehem’s Ronald Cruz, 16-0, 12 KOs, and Prenice Brewer, 16-1-1, 6 KOs, of Cleveland. The fight will be for the Vacant WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Championship. The winner of the bout takes home his first piece of hardware as a professional. Clearly Cruz will have the hometown advantage, but Brewer brings a wealth of top-level amateur experience in with him.

Two weeks after this show, Main Events snaps right back with another “Fight Night” installment, nationally televised by NBC Sports Network. On June 16, “Heavyweights Collide” when Tomasz Adamek, 45-2, 28 KOs, takes on Eddie Chambers, 36-2, 18 KOs, in a significant match of top big men for the IBF North American Heavyweight belt. Both fighters have fought for the world heavyweight title, and are raring to get back to the big show. Each stands in the other’s way. Adamek and Chambers are well-conditioned, quick-fisted, highly regarded talents in the sport. Their pairing is a natural and should make for a great fight. Chambers will have to contend with Adamek’s massive fan base, which will surely pack the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. But the fact that Chambers’ Philadelphia home base is not so far from Newark, means he too will have serious support for the fight. Clearly the atmosphere for this one should be electric.

Adding to the excitement on June 16th will be another key heavyweight match up when breakout star, Bryant Jennings, 13-0, 6 KOs, meets Steve Collins, 25-1-1, 18 KOs, of Houston, TX, in a 10-rounder for the Vacant USBA Heavyweight Title. This will be Jennings’ third appearance on the NBC Sports Network “Fight Night” series. His last bout was an overwhelming TKO of former champion Sergei Liakhovich in March. Collins will try to stop Jennings’ star-making streak in its tracks with his superior punching power. Main Events is promoting this show in partnership with Ziggy Promotions and Goossen Tutor Promotions.

After these three consecutive shows, Main Events will take the briefest of breathers before returning with more world class boxing.

Back in January Stoke Newington’s Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng won the English Light Middleweight title in emphatic style, on just his tenth professional outing, in a sensational all action battle against Liverpool’s Nick Quigley, that many have as an early contender for 2012 ‘Fight of the Year’ honours

In just under two weeks time 25 year old Erick will make the first defense of  this recently acquired  title, against Newark’s AA Lowe, on the undercard of the biggest, most meaningful UK event of the year so far, when Carl Froch challenges Lucian Bute  for the IBF Super Middleweight Crown, at the Nottingham Arena.

Following a recent training session, at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, an ebullient Erick was not only brimming with confidence, of victory on the 26th May, but was also keen to emphasise his Championship credentials.

“Yeah, I’ll be out again on the 26th May defending my English title against AA Lowe.

He’s a good boxer, he’s been around, so we’re looking to perform good, look good and retain my title in style.”

“Training has been excellent as ever, my manager/coach Brian Lawrence wouldn’t have it any other way and again I’ve had the best sparring you can get.

The quality of sparring here at the TRAD TKO makes all the difference, I did some eight rounders with Colin Lynes the other week and have had plenty of other quality sparring, these sparring sessions are great preparation.”

“I mean Colin Lynes is a former British, European and World Champion, you can’t get better than that, you’re always learning from those guys.

As you can see we’re not leaving any stone unturned in the gym, I’m in good shape so I’m looking to put a good performance on the 26th May.”

“I never look past people or my next fight, but have to say this is just the start, I’ve always said I am already a World Champion, just people don’t know it yet, they will soon but right now they know I’m the English Champion.

I will defend my title successfully on the 26th May and then by the end of the year my focus will be on the British or Commonwealth title.”

Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng’s English Light Middleweight title defense, against AA Lowe, will be main support at the Matchroom Sport promoted event headlined by the IBF Super Middleweight World Championship bout between Montreal, Canada based Romanian Lucian Bute and Nottingham’s Carl Froch, which  co-features Carl Frampton versus Raul Hirales, for the IBF Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight title, at the Nottingham Arena in Nottingham on Saturday 26th May 2012 and will be shown live and exclusive on Sky Sports.

In another busy weekend for the World Boxing Federation, Women’s World Bantamweight Champion Renata Szebeledi retained her title and Attila Baran captured the vacant Intercontinental Super Middleweight crown in Hungary Saturday night, while Klara Svensson took home the female ditto at Light Welter on a show in Germany the day before.

Szebeledi, who won the WBF World title by going to Germany to defeat hometown favorite Pia Mazelanik in Lemgo last July, took on former foe Eva Marcu of Romania in Budapest, and once again the two women, both only twenty years old, gave each other a good scrap before the champion pulled home the victory.

The end came at 0:30 into round number eight when Szebeledi, at this point clearly on top of things, caught Marcu with some stinging blows, forcing the referee to intervene as the game Marcu seemed unable to defend herself. Having won ten of her last eleven bouts, Szebeledi improved her professional record to 16-9 (9), and Marcu fell to 7-4 (2).

On the same card, promoted by Feja Promotion, youngster Attila Baran (19) made short work of fellow countryman Janos Olah in their fight for the Intercontinental Super Middleweight strap. After a one-sided first round where Baran dominated his foe, the end came mercifully in the second of the scheduled twelve.

Baran put on an impressive performance, knocking down Olaf two times before referee Janos Baranyi had seen enough and waved off the onslaught at 2:55. In time, Baran, who is now 10-2 (5), could be an interesting name to follow, while the best days of 30-year-old Olah, 10-9-1 (3), are probably in his past.

On the previous night in Goeppingen, Germany, talented Swede Klara Svensson won her first professional title when she thoroughly dominated game but outclassed Hungarian Zsofia Bedo on a card put on by EC Boxpromotion for the vacant Women’s Intercontinental Light Welterweight title.

Svensson, now 5-0 (1) and managed by former European Champion Oktay Urkal, chased Bedo, 5-25-1 (1), for most of the ten rounder, and only guts and a big heart saved the Hungarian girl from going down or even being stopped. It was a flawless performance by the Malmo-boxer, who, if anything, lacks a bit of power in her punches.   In the end German judges Arno Pokrandt, Frank Michael Mass and Holger Wiemann all scored it the same: 100-90. Klara Svensson is undoubtedly one of the female stars of the future.

7th AIBA Women’s World Championships

Report: Day 3

Today saw the first appearance  of  ‘ Magnificent Mary’ , at flyweight, at the 7^th AIBA World Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao as Indian ‘living legend’ and five times AIBA World Champion  Chungneijang Mary Kom  Hmangte came face to face with Japan’s Asian championships bronze medallist ,Ayako Minowa.

In truth it was a one sided encounter  since Mary won their bout as easily as the 20:9 judges verdict suggests.  She now meets Norway’s European Championships quarter-finalist 22-year-old Marielle Hansen.  Marielle is ‘one for the future’ but it will be a major shock if she defeats  Mary Kom.

The United States maintained their 100 percent record  when US National Olympic Trials winner and AIBA Women’s World Championships bronze medallist Marlen Esparza defeated Argentina’s multiple Pan-American Champion Pamela  Paola  Benavides 20:10 . Next up for Esparza , is Vietnam’s 19-year-old Luu Thi Duyen .

The no. 1 seed was also in action Sunday when two-time AIBA World Champion and Asian Games titleholder, Ren Cancan from China  scored an impressive  16 : 4 win in front of her home fans  as  she eliminated Hungary’s EU Championships silver medallist Katalin Ancsin ,also at flyweight.

For Russia,  Elena Savelyeva  was another who  won with something to spare when she met and defeated Chinese Taipei’s Pin Meng Chieh. As the bell tolled at end of round two Savelyeva led by 12:7 and she continued to dominate to the end against a gallant but overwhelmed Asian rival, 19:8 being the declared score.

Victory  also for Ireland’s Ceire Smith, who boxes out of the Cavan BC under trainer Brian McKeown. This was the 20 years old‘s second win in two days as she overcame Jamaica’s Sarah-Joy  Rae 12:4. In the Irish corner today were Peter Taylor – coach and father of Katie – and Zuar Antia and certainly Ceire carried out their instructions to the letter.

The number two seed in this weight division is Great Britain’s Nicola Adams and she too had an impressive second victory of the tournament overcoming Bulgaria’s Yana Levankova 19:7. Adams again demonstrated why she is one of the favourites  for the title and now meets Venezuela’s Pan-American Champion Karla Magliocco in the last 16.

Astana International Tournament winner Azize Nimani  was born in Kosovo but is fighting for Germany in the Olympic flyweight class. The 21-year-old  won each of her contests until the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Championships in Bridgetown where she lost her first ever bout. Nimani continued her excellent winning series in Qinhuangdao as well where she turned back the fight against a favourite, Finland’s AIBA World Championships bronze medallist experienced Hanne Maekinen.

European Championships silver medallist Sarah Ourahmoune is a member of the French national squad since 2001 and these experiences resulted to her a victory over Ukraine’s former European Champion Tatyana Kob. The 30-year-old French boxer dominated the fight and advanced to the last 16 eliminating her seeded opponent.

Bulgaria’s European Championships bronze medallist and EU Champion Stoyka Petrova is on the right way to the London Olympic Games. She has eliminated a strong Asian rival, Thailand’s Peamwilai Laopeam in the first round and following that success, Petrova triumphed over Italy’s best hope, Valeria Calabrese in the next round.

France’s EU Championships silver medallist 25-year-old Delphine Mancini who is member of the national team since 2005, shocked the Turkish ringside and fans in Qinhuangdao. The French bantamweight boxer controlled her opening fight against Turkey’s European Championships bronze medallist strong Ayse Tas and had six points advantage before the final gong. The Istanbul-based Turkish boxer tried to turn back the fight and made an incredible last round but her efforts were not enough to win the bout therefore Mancini eliminated the Seed No.1.

Poland’s European Championships silver medallist Sandra Drabik could not secure her place in the Olympic flyweight class therefore she has decided to move up into the bantamweight division. The powerful Polish boxer did not give too many chances to Afghanistan’s Dushanbe International Tournament silver medallist Sadaf Rahimi and the referee stopped their unequal contest very quickly.

In the light flyweight division China’s President’s Cup winner 20-year-old Xu Shiqi who replaced Luo Yujie just before the tournament, started her competition and saved the host nation’s perfect balance. The young Chinese boxer outpointed Sweden’s Turkish Prime Ministry Tournament silver medallist Elin Roennlund in the first round and finally she could celebrate her advance winning the bout by 12:5. Xu Shiqi’s next opponent will be Wales’ European Championships silver medallist Lynsey Holdaway who was seeded as No.1.

Romania’s European Championships silver medallist Lidia Ion moved down into the light flyweight class following her loss at the National Cup in the Olympic 51kg. The experienced boxer had to use up all of her skills to beat Tajikistan’s 22-year-old Matluba Karimova who had less international contests in her career.

Poland’s former European Youth Champion 20-year-old Magdalena Stelmach’s skills and boxing knowledge extremely developed in the last one year therefore her great show against Venezuela’s Nurys Silvera was not a surprise. The referee stopped the contest in the third round when Stelmach led by 15:3 against her South American opponent.

Russia’s former European Youth Champion 22-year-old Daria Abramova secured the right at the very first time to represent her strong nation in Qinhuangdao. Her first rival was France’s European Championships quarter-finalist Laetitia Chevalier but the Russian boxer won their contest in the easier way than expected before the bout.

Netherlands’ current European Champion veteran Marichelle De Jong who was seeded as welterweight No.1 in Qinhuangdao, defeated the second Indian boxer in the competition. Her Asian opponent, National Games winner Neetu Chahal led by 2:1 after two minutes but De Jong stepped up to the gas and her efforts were enough to beat the Indian fighter. The Dutch boxer became the first in the event in China who could secure her place in the quarter-final stage of the championships.

US National Champion Raquel Miller,who began boxing only in 2010, fought for the last eight against Canada’s current Pan-American Champion Myriam Da Silva at the welterweight class. They met each other at the AMBC’s Continental Championships in Cornwall in March where the Canadian boxer won their narrow contest with one point difference. In Qinhuangdao the US competitor was able to strike back to her opponent and advanced to the quarter-final winning the equal bout by accepted scores.

China’s current Asian Champion 19-year-old Wang Dongmei finalized the perfect day for the host nation following her easy success over Sri Lanka’s Asian Championships bronze medallist Dapana Durage Shiromali Weerarathna. Wang’s next opponent in the quarter-final will be Russia’s former European Champion Irina Poteyeva who eliminated Wales’ 18-year-old Lauren Price in a narrow battle”

Monday sees the much looked forward to  ‘battle royal’ between Claressa Shields (USA) and Great Britain’s Savannah Marshall whilst Ireland’s Katie Taylor begins the defence of her 60kg lightweight crown against Tunisia’s Rim Juini, a bronze medallist in the 57kg class in Barbados 2010. A great day’s boxing in store then Monday – and indeed for the rest of the week.

TRAD TKO Fighters Head Up May 20th London Mega Show

Over the past few years Miranda Carter has been quietly pioneering a series of Sunday afternoon events at York Hall in Bethnal Green. In the past these events have featured maybe six or seven bouts, however her latest offering, which takes place this coming Sunday, is far from low key affair, instead entering the mega event zone with a fourteen bout card.

The event, titled ‘Rolling Thunder’, heavily features fighters from Johnny Eames’ famous Canning Town fight factory – the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym.

Originally the event was to feature just three of the East London trained stars but after Butch Lesley had to withdraw from the original headlining British Masters title bout with Menay Edwards, this was increased to five, including the new headlining bout, a rematch between Hackbridge, Surrey’s Danny Connor and Ely, Cambridgshire’s Tyler Goodjohn, this time for the British Masters Welterweight title.

Last time these two met, back in March last year, Goodjohn came out on top, however things may be a little different this time around, as Connor has really turned his career around, racking up five top class wins out of six outing. Goodjohn on the other hand has had just two wins out of three, and the loss was a brutal knockout dished out by the forceful hands of Vinny Woolford in November last year.

Heading up the support is Connor’s TRAD TKO gym mate, former British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, who will be making his first appearance since the shock loss of his coveted Lonsdale belt back in January.

Surprisingly Williams isn’t looking for an easy fight, to ease himself back, oh no the man nicknamed ‘Solid’ is so determined to get back on the Championship trail that he has elected to face Lithuania’s #1 ranked Remigijus Ziausys.

Also on the support card is rising Cruiserweight star Menay Edwards, who will be making his first outing under the TRAD TKO banner. Edwards, whose record stands at 7-1, will be looking to impress, against unbeaten Lawrence Bennett, in order to earn the right for a tilt at the Southern Area title later this year.

Making his debut at the event is yet another TRAD TKO newbie, Eric ‘Congo Warrior’ Mokonzo, who will be receiving a baptism of fire at the hands of Hayes hardman Darren McKenna.

Former World amateur #2 female boxer Areti Mastrodouka is the fifth of the TRAD TKO squad that will take part in the ‘Rolling Thunder’ event. In her debut, at Miranda Carter’s March 2012 event, Mastrodouka put on a stylish display to beat Kristine Shergold by a 60-55 points margin.

On the 20th May, 36 year old Mastrodouka is set to face a much younger opponent in 20 year old Latvian #1 ranked featherweight Julija Cvetkova.

Of the non-TRAD TKO contingent, the pick of the bunch sees Epsom, Surrey’s unbeaten Middleweight J.M. Coyle face a stern test, as he takes on Wickford, Essex hardman Danny Brown. Coyle may have the unbeaten record but Brown will be no walk over especially as he’ll be looking to extend his excellent run of a win and a draw against previously unbeaten opponents so far in 2012.

Another potential cracker sees two unbeaten fighters, Light Welterweights Luke Fowler and John Brennan, battle it out.

Also on the card are unbeaten foursome, Upminster Lightweight Ryan Taylor, Stratford Super Middleweight Scott Hartley, Luton Light Welterweight Danny Mulhern and Kensington Middleweight Daley Ojuederie, who will be joined by debutantes, Bexleyheath Lightweight Jack Dishart, Middleweight Alex McKay and Tilbury Welterweight Matt McCarthy – who are all against yet to be named opponents.
