WKN – The New Generation of Kickboxing ! - The origins of Full Contact Kick-boxing can be found in Thailand in the 2000 year old discipline of Muay Thai fighting. Thai boxing – like many other martial arts was devised, initially, for self-defence. It only developed into a sport when unarmed combat in warfare became less and less effective. It remains the national sport of Thailand. Thai boxers are awarded the same superstar status in their home nation as premier league footballers in Europe or basketball players in the USA. Full Contact Kick-boxing developed through a combination of Muay Thai and other martial art influences. It was aided in its rise, as were all martial arts at the time, when Bruce Lee exploded onto the big screen. The first time anything resembling what we now know as, Full Contact Kick-boxing began in the United States in the early 1970’s as Full Contact Karate. Read More

Badou Jack vs. Alexander Brand On May 11th

alt
Undefeated super middleweight Badou Jack “The Ripper” (10-0, 8 KOs) of Sweden says he’s planning on having a great time when he makes his ShoBox: The New Generation debut on Friday, May 11 against Colombia’s also undefeated Alexander Brand (17-0, 15 KOs).

The pair will meet as part of a live doubleheader telecast (11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®, delayed on the West Coast) entitled “Shootout at Texas Station”, presented by Warriors Boxing live from the Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas, headlined by Cuba’s Yudel Jhonson (12-0, 8 KOs) taking on Cleveland’s Willie “The Great” Nelson (17-1-1, 11 KOs) in the 10-round light middleweight main event.

“He seems like a wild puncher who doesn’t have the best defense,” said Jack of opponent Brand. “I’m gonna beat him up and have fun. I like guys like this that throw wide shots.”

This will be Jack’s first fight at 168 lbs, but the former Olympian says he’ll have no trouble making weight, having done his preparation at Floyd Mayweather’s gym with trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, and sparring with respected contenders like Ishe Smith and J Leon Love.

“To see how Floyd trains motivates me to work even harder. I feel good I like to mix it up, box and pressure my opponent. I can do it all and I can’t wait to show everybody my skills and put on an exciting fight for the crowd and the TV viewers. I’m learning so much from my trainer Eddie Mustafa. I’m definitely in my prime right now. I just need more experience.”

Jack says that while his victory is assured, it is Brand who will decide how things unfold. “It depends. If he’s trying to win, we’ll go home early, but if he runs and just tries to survive, sometimes it can be hard to stop a guy who don’t’ want to fight. I won’t go out there looking for the knockout, but if it comes, it comes.”

Tickets for “Shootout at Texas Station” are on sale now, priced at $27 and $52 and are available at Ticketmaster, any Texas Station rewards center or at SCLV.COM/CONCERTS. A few VIP seats are available at a price of $102 can be purchased by calling (954) 985-1155.

On fight night, doors open at 6:30 and the action starts at 7:00 pm.

Boxing News & Notes From Arizona – 1/05

By Don Smith

Boxing Fans,

altIn 2009 after losing a  12 round unanimous decision to Paul Williams, Boxer Ronald Lamont Wright aka “Winky” Wright  quit boxing and there was no reason to think he would ever return to boxing.  He is back with a renewed love for the sport. For  the last 2-3 weeks, the 41 year old southpaw has been  preparing for a comeback fight at Busted Knuckle Gym in North Phoenix. Rumors on the Internet suggest the former world champ will meet tough Peter Quillen on  June 2  on the under card of the Antonio Tarver/Lateef Kayode Cruiserweight bout at the Home Depot Center in Carson California ; televised on Showtime.  This bout has been moved twice, so the word official has to used cautiously.  Promising light heavyweight Trevor McCumby (4-0 w/4 knockouts) also trains at Busted Knuckle and now resides in Phoenix, Arizona after living in Glendale Arizona where he attended high school.  Trevor was born in Yorkville Illinois. Don’t hold that against him.

Wright and McCumby may attend a May 19  car wash/raffle fundraiser  for a  disabled Phoenix lady who needs help with her medical bills. The community supported  fundraiser takes place at  Rips Ales & Cocktails in Phoenix (Earll & 16th Street).  Nice to see athletes use their celebrity status to help the truly needy. They could  join a group of fine young Phoenix boxers  who are tentatively scheduled to don sponges and wash cars and trucks on that special day. The list includes: Jose Benavidez Jr., David Benavidez, Javier Loya, Victor Castro,  Abe Ramos, Andrew Hernandez, Paul “Ziggy” Romero and Isiah McFadden…. way to go guys! Several local athletes have donated signed collectibles to the raffle….  including 2001 World Series hero Luis Gonzalez and former Phoenix Suns great Alvan Adams .  All guest appearances are subject to change…just like in boxing cards…surprise, surprise.

Speaking of Jose Benavidez Jr…the undefeated junior welterweight  is scheduled to fight on the under card of the Antonio Margarito / Abel Perry May 26 10 round   fight in Tucson Arizona at the Del Sol Casino/Resort. Apparently his right wrist injury, suffered last year, is healed and the budding superstar is ready to continue his accelerated ascension to #1. Recently Jose Jr. told reporters he was at 40-45% healed….that Arizona water  and sunshine must be a powerful potion.  Phoenix boxers are well represented on the card. In  addition to Benavidez Jr. , Andrew “Hurricane” Hernandez aka The Pride of Phoenix and Juanito Gonzalez.

Juanito was very impressive in his domination of  Saul Benitez in a 4 rounder on the April 21 Legends 2 show produced by Iron Boy Promotions and held at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Gonzalez had Benitex in trouble throughout the bout but couldn’t deliver the knockout blow. The victory upped the 20 year old light middleweight Gonzalez’s official  record to 5-0 w/3 knockouts.Box Rec has his mark at 4-0.  Next up for Gonzales, a bout on the May 26 Margarito card in Tucson and maybe  just maybe a fight on the June 16th Iron Boy Promotions card at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix if he doesn’t suffer a serious injury.Arizona  Welterweight Marcos Medias (3-4)  fights at the Desert Diamond Casino  in Tucson on May 4. After losing his first two fights, Medias changed management and  is now looking much better in the ring.  The casino show (“Noche de Boxeo”)hopes to capture the festive mood of Cinco de Mayo weekend  to draw fight fans. It could be a winning formula. Lightweight Juan “Taco Man”  Suazo headlines the main event and super bantamweight Isaac “El Huracan” Hildago takes on TBA in the co-main event. Light Heavyweight Robert Lopez  makes his pro debut after a very successful amateur career. Super Bantamweight Emilio Colon Garcia aka “Milo Time” is on the under card and fans are becoming a bit leery about his ring foes. Garcia, 5-0-1 , needs to start facing stiffer opposition. In his last fight at the Celebrity, the popular Emilio took on Jesse “The Razor” Ruiz who entered the ring at 0-1 against the much more experienced Garcia.   Ruiz is a tough kid and deserves to take a bow for his gutsy performance  when you factor in the fact that he has no amateur experience and he moved up in weight class the for the Garcia bout. Emilo is a good kid but it’s time to get real. After his win, Emilio’s female promoter walked over to her fighter and planted a  congratulatory kiss on his lips. Despite the kiss, he didn’t seem too happy with his performance in the ring.     Doors open at 6pm and first bell chimes at 8:00…leaves a little time for gambling.

Phoenix featherweight Paul “Ziggy” Romeo has resumed training after a single bee sting threatened his future in boxing. He was helping his father when the attack occurred.  It took weeks for the swelling of his face to return to normal. No word on his next fight……Lightweight Arlo “Fists Full of Aces” Arguetta  has returned to boxing  after taking care of some personal issues. 9 months ago he said “No Mas.” Arlo is a good kid and a very talented  young fighter. He might fight at the Celebrity Theatre on June 16…just a rumor. Hot 130 lb prospect Carlos Castro was to make his debut on the Legends 2 card but his opponent (Edgar Pinedo) never made it to the venue…compass for Xmas?

Mace quells rowdy fans…unfortunately some sports fans are idiots as witnessed by some out of control fans attending the Night of Legends 2 show on April 21 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. 4 scheduled  fights into the evening, a  fight broke out in the audience and at least a dozen people began duking it out. There were at least two women seen throwing punches and both females punched as if it wasn’t their  first time to make a fist. The blame for such an incident falls squarely  on the Celebrity Theatre. They’re responsible  for  security and on April 21 the facility and its’ occupants were left unprotected . Eventually, Phoenix police arrived and subdued the trouble makers with a strong dose  of mace and some good old fashioned  muscle. It should have never happened. Thanks to the mace, it looked like one section was watching the classic romantic movie Love Stroy instead of hard core boxing.

Too bad…it wasn’t fair to the boxers who wanted to impress their fans. There were several exciting  bouts worth mentioning. On the under card: Chris Lopez and David Yanez went toe to toe for 4 rounds. lopez was declared the winner but the majority of fans disagreed. Lopez’s management declined to answer if there fighter would give Yanez a rematch. Fans would like to see the 128 pounders rumble again.  Another close and controversial  contest pitted  123 lb amateurs Francisco C’ De Vaca vs. Edgar Brito….despite fan disapproval, De Vaca won on the scorecard. Brito is a scrapper. Undefeated  135 lb Victor Castro won by TKO and continues to improve each time out. In the main event, 140 lb Abel Ramos delivered with a TKO win  over Joel Gonzales. According to boxing gossip,  Ramos is on the verge of being signed by a major promotions company. It couldn’t happen to a nicer kid. Iron Boy’s next show at the Celebrity is scheduled for June 16. …until next time!

Derry’s Reasons For Facing Crolla

alt

DERRY MATHEWS insists he wouldn’t have agreed to face Anthony Crolla unless Danny Vaughan returned to his corner.

The Liverpool ace (29-6-1) had been trained by Oliver Harrison, but was re-united with former handler Vaughan for Saturday’s challenge against British lightweight champion Anthony Crolla (23-2).

Mathews, 28, set up training camps in Scotland and Spain ahead of his test against Crolla at Oldham Sports Centre.

He said: “I am back with my old trainer, Danny Vaughan and that is the reason I took this fight.

“I got offered it and if Danny had said ‘no’ to training me I wouldn’t have taken the fight.

“I have been away, had great sparring, prepared right and everything is going good.”

Mathews is the underdog when he faces improving Crolla, but promised: “From the first bell to the last it is going to be non-stop action.

“I know how good Anthony is and I am expecting to face a good, strong fit opponent and I haven’t look past him.”

Other Contests: Matty Askin v Jon Lewis Dickinson (10×3 vacant English cruiserweight championship and British title eliminator), Stephen Foster Jr v Jose Antonio Elizabeth (6×3 super-featherweight), Jazza Dickins v Yuri Voronin (6×3 super-bantamweight), Lucas Browne v Paul Butlin (6×3 heavyweight), Adam Little v Chris Jenkinson (6×3 welterweight), Tommy Stubbs v Gavin Reid (4×3 bantamweight), Ryan Doyle v Selected Opponent (4×3 featherweight).

Boxing starts at 6.15pm and tickets are on sale. They are priced at £35 general admission, £55 floor seating, £75 ringside and £100 VIP Ringside.
