Ron Katz: Interview

WWBPL Correspondent Beverly Cooper interviews legendary match maker Ron Katz
Friday May 6 – I spoke to this Smooth Cat Daddy by the name of Ron Katz, legendary matchmaker for Star Boxing. He schooled this girlie on boxing in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. where it once was on the map in the purest form of entertainment value.
Ron spoke from his heart of passionate memories,
“Gyms were bustling worldwide then, full of young hopefuls wanting to be taught!
People like Teddy Brenner, Bob Arum, Johnny Bos – who broke me in when I started – Real Fight People !
We have lost a great amount of teachers ! The Strongest is Freddie Roach ! Real Fight People ! We had a Strong Heavyweight division then – and people who never really followed boxing would watch, the ‘ cross-over ‘ fans.
Mike Tyson fights, I was involved in 20 of those fights, everyone wanted to watch. Merqui Sosa vs. “Prince” Charles Williams now that was a fight.. each time they fought ! some of my proudest moments. They were brutal, well planned fights. Nothing like a great prize fight ! We are currently lacking in great American Heavyweights. We might have some strong possibilities with Joe Hanks and Seth Mitchell.”
I read a quote that Ron made in Thomas Hauser’s book, Muhammad Ali & Company, ‘As a Matchmaker you have to have the best interests of the public at heart. Let someone else look out for the managers, the promoters, even the fighters. My job is to lookout for the fans, so I try to make fights that I want to watch myself.’ I asked Ron if he still feels this way and what fight does he and the fans want to see now ? Ron in his gruff voice said, “of course the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. fight ! There is no good reason for this fight not to happen. There is nothing left but for Floyd Mayweather Jr.to agree. And no one knows but Floyd why he hasn’t agreed. If this was boxing of the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s these two would have fought 4 times already ! that’s how boxing was.
A Great Fighter in my opinion has to have 1) ability to build on.. towards development making of a star. 2) Charisma – Showmanship qualities to increase their visibility. Without these qualities they are just another fighter.”
I asked Ron how he has remained after all these years, a Real Fight Person – Still going strong and have the love for what he does ? With much conviction Ron stated, once its in your blood, its in your blood forever !
Finally I wanted to know from Ron how he won Week Six of the Worldwide Weekly Boxing Predictions League run by Andrew Millwall ? Ron broke out in a loud laugh and said, “ this isn’t the first time I have won ! Andrew cheats me out of points.. it’s a conspiracy ! ”
My shout out to Ron… Thank you for taking your time out to talk with me ! I enjoyed our conversation immensely !
Top Rank–Donaire Contract Enforced
Judge Orders Golden Boy To Stop Promoting Nonito Donaire “The Filipino Flash”, Arum Wins Suit
The mediator and arbitrator in the legal clash between Bob Arum (Top Rank) and Golden Boy Promotions (Richard Schaeffer), the Honorable Daniel Weinstein – on the matter of boxer Nonito Donaire, has ruled that there is an enforceable contract in existence between Donaire and Top Rank.
In the belief that he was a free agent it is reported that Nonito accepted the offer made by Golden Boy Promotions of an undisclosed signing-on fee plus a guarantee of earnings of at least one million dollars in the next year.
Donaire apparently hired the legal services of Las Vegas, attorney John Bailey and sent a letter to Top Rank, informing them of his decision to accept the Golden Boy offer. Top rank apparently sent out their own legal letter before the contract expired, exercising their right of an option for a one year extension written in the contract.
Bob Arum acting on behalf of Top Rank decided to challenge this and said, “We have a valid, enforceable contract and we’ll pursue our legal rights against Donaire, Golden Boy and anyone else who is involved. We are absolutely confident we will prevail.”
After studying the agreements in existence Judge Weinstein decided in favour of Top Rank and gave his judgment accordingly.
It seems that the contract between Nonito and Top Rank was for a period of three years but on the expiry of this term there was an option of a one year extension to the contract and that Top Rank wished to take advantage of this extension.
Commenting on this legal decision Bob Arum said, “Adding in the time we lost, it pushes the contract to 2013. So what this kid has to do now is to live up to the contract”.

- Devon Alexander Vs Timothy Bradley update — Originally the fight was planned as a junior welterweight unification bout with three major titles involved. Now, only the WBO title will be at stake when Timothy Bradley faces Devon Alexander in the main event of an HBO-televised card on January 29. Alexander was recently stripped of the IBF title for refusing to go forward with a mandatory defense against South African boxer Kaizer Mabuza, by December 28, which was impossible since the Bradley fight was already scheduled 31-days from the deadline. – On the other hand Bradley has refused to pay the WBC sanctioning fee, according to Bradley’s promoter Gary Shaw. Thus if Bradley wins, he will not gain Alexander’s WBC belt. However, Alexander stands to gain Bradley’s WBO title. (if Bradley wins on the 29th Jan 2011 the WBC title becomes vacant).

- Alan Green to appeal - Alan Green has decided to appeal the loss of his fight with Glen Johnson, to the Nevada State Athletic Commission due the fact that Green was hit with what appeared to be a rabbit shot and instead of referee Robert Byrd penalizing Johnson for the rabbit shot, he counted it as a legit knockdown. And then to make matters worse, Byrd stopped the fight while Green was trying to complain about the punch. Even after Green got to his feet at the count of eight, Byrd still stopped the fight. However the chances of Green overturning the decision are slim to none, basically it was Green who bent down and exposed the back of his head to Johnson.
