Latest Boxing News For: Jean Pascal Vs Bernard Hopkins - Humberto Soto Update - Kessler vs. Bouadia –Arreola vs Aguilera This Saturday - David Tua and Kali Meehan in Negotiations - Arce coming to Puerto Rico -Haye trash talks Wladimir and Witter on next Prizefighter

• Jean Pascal Vs Bernard Hopkins

The Quebec (Canada), Commission is considering additional dope testing for both parties in the rematch fight between WBC/IBO light heavyweight Champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs) and former world champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KOs). The bout will take place at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on the 21^st of May. At a press conference in March, Pascal suggested that Hopkins could have used doping in preparation for the fight which ended in a draw. Pascal openly challenged Hopkins to take the dope tests.

Meanwhile, in accordance with the requirements of Hopkins, there will be no Canadians amongst officials. The WBC has appointed the following officials – Judges are Rey Danseco (Philippines), Anek Hontongkam (Thailand) and Guido Cavalleri (Italy). The third man in the ring will be 48-year old Ian John-Lewis (UK).

• Humberto Soto Update

It is being said that current WBC lightweight world champion Humberto ‘Zorrita’ Soto will next defend his title against Japan’s Motoki Sasaki (36-8-1, 23 KOs).venue and dates have not yet been mentioned, but Oaxaca, Guanajuato and Queretaro are two possibilities being mentioned.

• Kessler vs. Bouadia

Former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 Ko’s) will be fighting for the first time in over a year when he steps into the ring to fight French contender Mehdi Bouadia 22-3, 10 KO’s) in a fight in Parken, Copenhagen, Denmark. This fight will serve as a tune-up bout for Kessler to get rid of his ring rust and stat paving the way forward for an eventual shot against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in the future.

• Arreola-Aguilera This Saturday

Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola is scheduled to return to The Home Depot Center this Saturday, May 14 to fight Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera. The Heavyweight bout is the co-feature to the Super Six World Boxing Classic semi-final bout between WBA Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward and former world champion Arthur Abraham.

• David Tua and Kali Meehan in Negotiations

Theage.com.au has reported that Australian heavyweight Kali Meehan, now aged 41, has begun negotiating for a year-end clash with New Zealand powerhouse David Tua, who at age 38 is a few years younger than Meehan, also has the option of facing Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett in the summer; with the return fight being one Tua wants after the shock draw he fought to with the New Yorker last July.

• Arce coming to Puerto Rico

WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel said yesterday that he will invite new champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce to Puerto Rico to get his belt and pay tribute to the fighter to become the first Mexican boxer with world titles in four different weight divisions (counting interim titles). “We are coordinating the date for bringing Arce to Puerto Rico for giving him his super bantamweight belt and also giving him a diamond ring for his three WBO titles,” Valcarcel said about the three WBO crowns Arce won at 108, 115 and 122 pounds. Arce (57-6-2, 44 KOs) won the WBO 122lb title last Saturday when he beat by TKO Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (20-1-1, 17 KOs) in round 12. His other belt was the WBC interim 112lb title.

• Witter on next Prizefighter

Junior Witter and Colin Lynes head the bill for the Prizefighter Welterweights II at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Tuesday June 7 – the final Prizefighter of the season. Former WBC light welterweight champion Witter could face Lynes at the same venue that they met in 2005 when Sheffield’s Witter successfully defended his Commonwealth, European and British titles against Londoner Lynes. Witter won his WBC crown in 2006 against DeMarcus Corley and defended it twice the following year before Timothy Bradley took it from him through a split decision in 2008. There’s a chance for double retribution for former IBO World, British and European champ Lynes, with that score to settle against ‘The Hitter’ as well as one with Prizefighter, after he lost the Light-Welterweights final to Gavin Rees in December 2009. Former British champion Kevin McIntyre, unbeaten prospects John Wayne Hibbert and Bobby Gladman, Yassine El Maachi, Peter McDonagh and Nathan Graham complete the line-up for the 19th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments.

• Haye trash talks Wladimir

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) and IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) met on Monday in a press conference in Hamburg, Germany at the Imtech Arena, the site where the two fighters will be battling on July 2nd. Haye, 30, refused to shake Wladimir’s hand during the meeting and continued with his war of words aimed at angering the 6’6″ Ukrainian. As usual, Wladimir has opted to not trash talk – Wladimir said “I really respect you and you are a fantastic fighter with an impressive record. I believe it will be a pretty good lesson in respect on July 2nd.”

The recent Hopkins- Pascal press conference in Montreal could only be described as a debacle that leaves much to be desired on the part of both boxers.

Bad behavior of this sort is what gives the sport a negative reputation. What happened (28^th) just a few days ago is most definitely not a case of a little harmless hype or even a little trash talk, involving a few harmless insults.

Looking at the released video it seems that Pascal started it all – Taking the microphone and going into a tantrum shouting repeatedly that Bernard Hopkins must take a blood test – “Will you take the stand?” Pascal screamed into the mike.

To his credit Hopkins, seems to make an effort to control himself but then loses it as well and decides to join the melee.

Unfortunately such scenes at boxing conferences are becoming more commonplace. Excessive trash talk, personal insults, wild accusations and aggressive behavior are sending out the wrong message.

It is small wonder that boxing is losing its allure. Such reprehensible behavior is not likely to attract a family audience.

Boxers who behave badly should be penalized. Boxing commissions the world over should withhold part of the purse money whenever this type of negative, sordid behavior emerges and in extreme cases even postpone or ban the fight altogether.

At this level the participants should be acting as role models to emerging and upcoming young professionals.

Boxers should also keep in mind that those huge payouts are ultimately funded by the aficionados.

Such scenes as these are disrespectful to the sport and the fans.

Boxing’s ageless wonder, Bernard “The Executioner Hopkins” whose accomplishments and legacy have made him into a living legend, celebrates his  46th birthday tomorrow, January 15.

.
It’s an amazing feat for an athlete who has defied the odds by remaining a member of boxing’s list of top pound-for-pound fighters, an exclusive club he has occupied for over a decade. His last fight, a stirring 12 round performance against WBC and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal in December, made it clear that the future Hall of Famer is still holding out and defying time.

Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO’s) hopes that his 47th year will bring him vindication in the form of a victory in a WBC mandated immediate rematch with Pascal following their controversial draw which almost all observers had Hopkins winning.

Hopkins wants to defeat Pascal in the rematch and continue his amazing ride of nearly 23 years as a professional by becoming the oldest  fighter to obtain a major world title.
