Boxing News & Notes: For: Angelo Dundee, Arizona Boxing News, Busted Knuckle Gym & Jesus  Gonzales  is in Canada

By Don Smith

  • Angelo Dundee passed last week at the age of 90. During his legendary career, he trained 15 World Champions in a body of work  that spanned six decades. Dundee was feisty, colorful, entertaining and a master at preparing his corner for the big fight. He may be best remembered for his alliance with Muhammad  Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard;but, boxing historians will remind boxing fans that it was Dundee who helped orchestrate  Carmen Basilio’s stunning upset victory over Sugar Ray Robinson at Yankee Stadium on September 23, 1957. In essence, he was boxing’s quintessential “ambassador” and fan. Farewell, Angelo and thank you.
  • Arizona Boxing News: Lightweight  Arlo “Fists Full of Aces Argueta, 4-0-2 knockouts, has stepped away from boxing for personal reasons. He was an amateur standout and a solid pro prospect…family comes first. Junior Middleweight Juan Gonzales  has two fights on tap : Friday, 2/10 in Vernon California  at El  Faro Plaza  and then the 20 year old prospect fights on the under card of the   Casino Del Sol  Show on  March 23  in Tucson, Arizona . Juan , no relation to former MLB slugger Juan “Long Gone” Gonzales, sports a record of 4-0-3 knockouts and  his poise in the ring is very impressive.  Junior Welterweight sensation  Jose Benavidez Jr. (14-0-12 knockouts) was scheduled for the casino  event  but a recurring right wrist injury forced him to forgo  his quest for victory # 15  and seek medical relief. . Jose Sr.,his father and trainer, reports that surgery went well and his son is already working out and preparing for his next fight in April or May.  The show at the Casino, is available for viewing on Showtime and the headline bout features Undefeated Super Featherweight Diego Magdalindo vs Miguel Beltran in a 12 round NABF Super Featherweight Championship Showdown …..  The Co-Main is Yorndenis “The Black Pearl ” Ugas Hernandez  vs Johnny Garcia. Both  Welterweights  enter the ring with identical 11-0 records. Garcia has 8 knockouts while Ugas has stopped 5. Yorndenis has dropped Hernandez from his ring introduction…no reason given…mom and dad are probably disappointed. One final thought on Jose Benavidez…Canadian Light Welterweight Steve “The Dragon” Claggett   has been calling out Jose for 6 months and he wanted the word passed…..so be it!
  • Busted Knuckle Gym , located in North Phoenix, Arizona, welcomes  back budding Welterweight star Shawn ” Showtime” Porter for preparation of his upcoming TBA fight at the end of this month or early March. Porter is managed by Arizona Rattlers Football Team  Minority owner John  Lennon. Porter holds an impressive 18-0 record accompanied with 13 knockouts.  Mr. Porter, Manny Pacquiao’s # 1 sparring partner,  is on track to win a title soon and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. . Alan Viers, ring master at the gym, is high on Super Middleweight  Trevor McCumby fighting out of Glendale, Arizona. McCumby is managed by Cameron  Dunkin, former manager of Jesus “El Martillo” Gonzales. Trevor is 3-0-3 knockouts as a light heavyweight. He will fight at about 172 his next bout. Update: Viers doesn’t know if Porter will cut his Arizona visit short  and head for Las Vegas to help Manny prepare for Tim Bradley. Miguel Cotto, a boxer with Arizona ties, will need his A game to defeat Floyd Mayweather. Few boxing insiders think he still has an A game.  Roger Mayweather and Jorge  “El Maromero” Paez will be acknowledged and honored at Iron Boy Promotions “Night of Legends” Event on 2/17 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. In addition to a tip of the hat for Paez and Mayweather, 5-6 professional boxing contests are planned. Celebrity is a great place to watch boxing..if the rent wasn’t so steep, promoters would be lined up to use the venue. Greed is not good..Gordon!
  • Jesus  Gonzales  is in Canada getting ready to do battle with Adonis “Superman” Stevenson in Montreal, Quebec on 2/18 at the Bell Centre. Stevenson is  trained  by H.O.F. Trainer Emanuel Steward after Adonis dropped Otis & Howard Gran; his long time mentors and former friends. So much for the handshake agreement they had. Betting money is on Stevenson as it was on the New England Patriots  when  they played the New York Giants  in Super Bowl 42 & 46. No word on  a live  stream from the fight.  Gonzales is under contract with Fan Base Boxing and their email address is:www.fanbaseboxing.com

Condolences to Angelo Dundee

The boxing world sends its condolences to legendary Hall of Fame trainer Angelo Dundee, whose beloved wife Helen died Thursday near their home in the Tampa area. She was 85 years old. Helen had suffered from various health problems in recent years. Angelo, who is recovering from hip surgery, has often said, “She is my toughest fighter.” Angelo and Helen would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in February. They might have seemed an unlikely pair when they first met. Angelo, an Italian from South Philly, was working the grimy gyms of New York. The former Helen Bolton, a “southern belle” from North Carolina, was a fashion model in New York City. Their union flourished through the years. A funeral will be held on Thursday at the Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, Florida. The viewing will be from 4-6 p.m. Condolences to Angelo, their son Jimmy, daughter Terri, and the entire Dundee family.

Angelo Dundee’s view on Pacman – Margarito fight

Pacquiao vs Margarito News and Updates, Online Streaming, Coverage, Pacquiao Margarito 24

Angelo Dundee’s view on Pacman – Margarito fight — While most people in boxing are predicting a Manny Pacquiao win on Saturday night, Hall of Fame trainer Angelo Dundee says Antonio Margarito has the style to derail Pacquiao, Dundee explains why he thinks Pacman in in for the fight of a life time. “The style of Margarito is the style that gives a southpaw trouble,” said Dundee. “He comes forward and the only way to fight a southpaw is to come forward. That is my interpretation. I trained a half dozen southpaws. I had a boxer named Andy Durell fight the greatest boxer of all time, Willie Pep, and he took it as a warm-up in Miami Beach. The southpaw gave him all the trouble he wanted, busted him up and everything and it was supposed to be an easy fight.” He continued, “Margarito has the style to give him ulcers (to Pacquiao). Margarito will be the biggest guy he has fought and he will fight aggressively and throw punches from every angle. It is going to be a great fight and I am glad it was made, I mean how long can you crucify a guy? It was wrong that Las Vegas turned the fight down.

“I like the area that the fight is going to be in and the crowd is going to be with Margarito. It is a tough fight and it wouldn’t amaze me to see Margarito come away with a win.

“I worked a couple of underdog fights Ali and Liston, Willie Pastrano and Harold Johnson, Rodriguez and Griffin. Odds don’t mean nothing, it is the individuals that are fighting each other – that mean everything.”
