Ireland: Women’s Boxing International
By Michael O’Neill
Ireland 24-03-2012
A historic first ever women’s boxing international in Ireland last night was inevitably dominated by Katie Taylor whose 25-5 win over Dutch champion Jessica Belder was watched by a few hundred spectators in the Stadium and countless others at home and abroad via the IABA’s welcome ‘Live streaming’ coverage of all eight bouts.
As another step on the Road to London (hopefully) via the World’s in Qinhuangdao, China this was a good start to a week which will also see her fight in Cavan (against the same opponent tomorrow), in Cork on 30th against 2011 Golden Gloves champion, Liz Leddy from Portland,Maine (USA) and in Dungarvan on 31st March when she meets N’yteeyah Sherman, the highly promising, 6ft tall, 19yrs old from Barberton, Ohio who came within a single point of defeating Queen Underwood at last month’s U.S Olympic Trials.
But let us not forget that this was also a night in which several of the Irish team made their debuts at Senior international level so special mention to Sarah Close of the Holy Family GG who defeated Willeke Verdellen (13-6) and Callan’s Clare Grace an impressive 21-19 winner over Lisa de Vilder.
An encouraging performance too from another making her senior debut, 16 years old, Christine Gargan of the St George’s Club, who albeit she was defeated by the Dutch title holder Alicia Holsken 7-10 will have benefited from the experience.
Defeat too for Drimnagh’s Sinead Kavanagh, who went under 17-9 against Nouchka Fontijn but let us remember that Nouchka is the European Gold medallist from Rotterdam and one of the favourites for an Olympic medal in London. The two will resume their rivalry when the two countries meet again at the Cavan Crystal Hotel tomorrow.
An excellent win for Michelle Lynch of the Golden Gloves club in Belmullet, Co Mayo, against the Australian Olympic trials winner Bianca Elmir 14-14 but 42/41 on count back to the Irish woman. Ireland’s other winner on this ‘special night’ was Dervla Duffy from the Ryston club, a very deserving 21-12 victory over Kristen Fraser, the 22 yrs old economics student at Aberdeen University.
For Taylor though this brought back memories of her first ever bout at the famous old Stadium back on 31 October 2001 when the then 15 years old from Bray met and defeated 16 years old Alanna Audley (now ABAE champion Alanna Murphy). This was the first ever licensed women’s bout in Ireland and who could have foreseen on that Halloween the great success story that is Katie Taylor. Happy memories of that night? :
“Yeah, I made history here when I fought Alanna back then,” Taylor told the ‘Irish Times’.
“She’s one of my best friends now, would you believe? She’s still boxing. She’s over in England. The two of us, we made history that day.”
History that day? – yes, and who knows perhaps further even more historic triumphs await. Only time will tell.

Olympic Boxing: Chemistry Cup Halle13/3
By AIBA
March 6 – 2012

On the 13th March, the doors to the 39th edition of the Chemistry Cup will open. This is the next significant event before the Olympic qualifiers and will be held in Halle, Germany. The world’s top boxing nations will be taking part in this exciting gathering.
The organisers are expecting 111 athletes from 19 nations to compete at the tournament and these nations make up four of the AIBA Confederations. The participating nations will be the host nation Germany, Algeria, Austria, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Romania, Russia and Uzbekistan.
There are no less than seven AIBA World Champions on the entry list of the Chemistry Cup, giving the local fans a unique opportunity to see world class fights in Halle.
One of these great athletes is Mongolia’s Olympic Games silver medallist, Purevdorj Serdamba, who secured the gold medal at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan. However, following that success, his form was not sufficient to win any further contests until he competed in the last edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku. Here, Serdamba achieved the bronze medal as well as a quota place for the London Olympic Games 2012.
Another formidable star, China’s Beijing Olympic Games winner and three-time AIBA World Champion, Zou Shiming will compete in the flyweight division in Halle. His main opponent will be Russia’s current AIBA World Champion, Misha Aloyan. Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Latipov, Germany’s Ronny Beblik and Mongolia’s Tugstsogt Nyambayar are also some of the incredible medal bearers from the AIBA World Championships.
Everton Lopes claimed the gold medal in the light welterweight class in Baku and made boxing history for Brazil. The 24-year-old South American boxer will have another chance to prove his skills and talent in Halle, but can expect to come up against some tough opponents, such as Mongolia’s AIBA World Championship bronze medallist, veteran Uranchimeg Munkherdene as well as Lithuania’s Youth Olympic Games winner, 20-year-old Evaldas Petrauskas.
Kazakhstan’s Serik Sapiyev attained an impressive four medals in the recent history of AIBA World Championships, among them two glorious golds. The potential clash between the Kazakh team captain and Russia’s top welterweight boxer, AIBA World Championships silver medallist, Andrey Zamkovoy is one of the most anticipated fights of the tournament.
Russia’s particularly hard-hitting duo, Egor Mekhontsev and Artur Beterbiyev, both had excellent performances at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan, where both boxers were adorned with medals. Following this accomplishment, both changed weight divisions and the upcoming tournament in Halle will certainly showcase the pair as strong gold medal contenders. It will also be an excellent opportunity to check out where they stand in their run-up to the Olympics.
Mongolia’s reigning Olympic Champion and former AIBA World Championship silver medallist, Enkhbat Badar-Uugan will return to the Chemistry Cup after a long recovery from injuries. Nonetheless, there is an undoubted likelihood that he will be able to reach the gold medal in the bantamweight class, where Germany’s European Champion, Denis Makarov, will be his major adversary.
Fighting for survival and for a chance at defending their thrones in Halle will be five titleholders, of which four represent Germany. We will witness Youth Olympic Games winner, 19-year-old Artur Bril, Patrick Wojcicki, Stefan Haertel as well as Kevin Kuenzel strutting their stuff on the canvas this March. Other top contenders to look out for at this year’s Chemistry Cup are Russia’s European Championship silver medallist, Dmitriy Polyanskiy and Ireland’s super talented light heavyweight boxer, current European Champion and AIBA Youth World Champion, Joseph Ward. It will be an exciting yet thorny contest, an event where we will be witness to some phenomenal boxing treats in the lead up to the London Games.

Youth Defines AIBA’s Future
Young Talent To Define The 2016 Rio Olympic Games Era

By AIBA
This year, several young talents will be ready to showcase their skills and test themselves on the biggest stages of all with glory the 2016 Rio Olympics the ultimate target. The forthcoming AIBA Youth World Championships, to be held in in October, will be the first chance to see up close the array of exciting fighters coming through.
The new look Russian youth team has now some of the most talented boxers coming through and it could well be that their squad is the strongest one they have had yet. Lightweight National Youth Champion Kristian Stepanov, AIBA Junior World Champion and European Junior Championships gold medallist Sergey Sobylinskiy, current Welterweight European Youth Champion Igor Kharitonov, European Junior Champion and Denisov Youth Cup gold medallist Andrey Stotskiy and European Junior Champion Khodzhiakbar Mamakov make up an impressive squad that many predict will be dominant for years to come.
The Azeri elite team is the youngest in the world, while their youth squad is also coming up strong. They have great expectations for the immediate and long-term future. Two Azeri boxers claimed gold medals at the European Youth Championships in Dublin, Parviz Bagirov and Rauf Rahimov. Both boxers were born in 1994 so expect them to further demonstrate their impressive techniques in all the youth tournaments this year.
Uzbekistan’s best Lightweight fighter Aliyor Noraliyev secured a gold medal at the AIBA Junior World Championships in Astana last year so he will be one to watch. We can also expect great things from his accomplished compatriots Anvar Turapov, Ahmet Comert, Junior Tournament winner Akmalbek Kosimov, AIBA Junior World Champion Oybek Sharipov and Sydney Jackson Memorial Tournament bronze medallist Ulugbek Mubinov. 2012 should prove a very successful year for this squad.
Puerto Rico’s Panamerican Games bronze medallist and National Elite Champion Jantony Ortiz will be celebrating his 18th birthday in July and he will be looking to qualify and compete at the London Olympic Games. His main goal this season will be to secure a gold medal at the upcoming AIBA Youth World Championships.
Current AIBA Junior World Champion, 16-year-old Asror Vohidov, who was awarded the best junior boxer trophy in 2011, is the biggest hope for Tajikistan in the upcoming Olympic era, but he will be concentrating on the youth level championships with Rio 2016 his main objective. We are most likely to see him moving up a division to Flyweight.
The Philippines traditionally have excellent boxers in the Light Flyweight category and with Ian Clark Bautista securing a silver medal at the President’s Cup amongst the elite boxers in Jakarta last July; he will be certainly able to continue the tradition of Filipino success at the AIBA Youth World Championships.
The Dominican Republic’s rising star is Panamerican Junior Champion Huascar Ramirez who, last year, suffered only one loss. Kevin Brown of Cuba will also have some good opportunities of securing some top results. El Salvador’s new hope, Nathan Ridings, who competed at the 16th AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku is also expected to shine in 2012.
Other strong youth fighters to look out for in 2012 are Kazakhstan’s powerful Olzhas Kalaubek, India’s Agalarov Youth Cup winner Ajay Kumar, Lithuania’s European Junior Championships bronze medallist Eimantas Stanionis, Hungary’s AIBA Junior World Championships silver medallist and European Junior Champion Norbert Herczeg, Serbia’s National Elite Champion Vanja Bacic, Georgia’s former European Junior Champion Aleksandr Dokvadze, Australia’s AIBA Junior World Champion Jai Opetaia and Ukraine’s European Youth Championships bronze medallist Bohdan Blazhko.
It is shaping up to be another exciting year, full of exciting talent.
Katie Taylor To Forgo Irish Title
SportsNewsIRELAND

Three times World champion, five times European titleholder, a four in a row European Union winner, and arguably Ireland’s most likely Olympic Games gold medallist and yet Katie Taylor will NOT be Irish Elite champion of 2012.
That honour will fall to Carla Wright, from the Gleann club in Belfast who on 3rd February will be crowned Irish champ without throwing a punch in anger. Carla won the Ulster Intermediate championship in September also on a walk over and the Ulster Senior title in December – again without an opponent.
Taylor has wisely opted to forgo her national title rather than take on the Irish intermediate champion, Carla Wright, who has had fewer than seven competitive fights in her career, and most, if not all, of those in Novice or Intermediate events. Such a contest if it had taken place would have been a ‘complete mismatch’ – the acknowledged world’s no 1 versus a novice although one who for the second year in a row has entered the Irish senior championships, albeit last year she withdrew giving Taylor a walk over.
It is true that Taylor had a long prearranged commitment to attend a vital training camp in Georgia during the IABA Elite Senior Championships , she would have been back and able to compete in the final against Wright. Taylor always has been and remains ‘light years’ ahead of any competition in Ireland, thus her own coaches – and the iABA – insist it would be quite pointless her taking on inexperienced boxers such as Carla Wright, so the Gleann boxer takes the title by default .
IABA High Performance Unit Chief Billy Walsh said : ‘Katie is going to be away training in Georgia, and it’s an important part of her preparation for the World Championships’ . ‘The fact of the matter is that Katie is in a different league to the rest of the girls in Ireland.’
Women`s boxing to make debut at Commonwealth Games
Women`s boxing to make debut at Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation`s general assembly in St. Kitts and Nevis has agreed to include three weight categories of women`s boxing for the future editions of the Commonwealth Games.
The development follows the inclusion of women`s boxing in the Olympics in which it makes its debut next summer at the London 2012 Olympic Games, AIBA said it was delighted to welcome this new step in the development of the sport.
International Boxing Association (AIBA) president Dr Ching-Kuo Wu has also welcomed the move,
“By having taken this decision, the hopes and dreams of many young female boxers will come true after their lifetime ambitions to win medals at the Commonwealth Games were made possible,” Dr Wu said.
“Hundreds of women are training very hard to compete at national, continental and international level and I am convinced that a lot of these women will relish competing at the Commonwealth Games,” he added.
