The Secretary General of the ‘Malta Boxing Council’ will be joining the President of the MBC Eva Rolle in Berlin, Germany, for the ‘International Boxing Federation’ Convention.

The International Boxing Federation or IBF is one of four major organizations which sanction world championship boxing bouts, alongside the WBA, WBC and WBO, it has amongst its ranking champions, Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine (Heavy-weight) – Sam Soliman of Australia (middle-weight) and Kell Brook of England (Welterweight).

Several boxers with illustrious careers and worldwide recognition have been ranked and have fought for the IBF world title including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Bernard Hopkins, George Foreman, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker, Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar de la Hoya.

This will be the 30th IBF convention and delegates from around the world will be attending.  The MBC President has set her targets for a 2014 show which will feature IBF Title in the Maltese Islands. The Maltese boxing council is also targeting the possibility of hosting the IBF convention in Malta the near future.

Just watch the Schedule section on our website: There are fights scheduled in Mexico, Morocco, France, Switzerland, South Africa, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and a few more countries to be finalized rather soon and of course we are extremely excited to be holding our convention in Saarbruecken, Germany in September where we hope to meet up with old friends and naturally make many new friends.
Having lived my whole life in South Africa, I witnessed the ugliness and horror of apartheid, where the masses were ruled by a small minority and where democracy simply did not exist. The minority ruled with great force and often intimidated the masses with torture and victimization. It was a sad time in South Africa’s history, but the release of Nelson Mandela, arguably the greatest man in the world, coupled with free and democratic elections enabled South Africa to become a free and great country. The bottom line is that inevitably democracy and freedom will always triumph over bullying and intimidation. Nowhere in the world should such a horror similar to apartheid be allowed to resurface.
The WBF’s growth in Mexico last year draws an interesting comparison to apartheid. It is sad that certain of our champions have been threatened and forced to relinquish their hard earned WBF titles, simply to accommodate the wishes of certain people who control certain television networks and other people, and like apartheid, control them through fear and intimidation. The WBF has never had a problem with our champions moving to other organizations, in fact in certain cases we have supported them – but all we ask is for these champions to make their choices out of their own free will, and not to be threatened to do so.
We at the WBF believe entirely on fighters having the right to fight for different sanctioning bodies, we believe in fighters’ rights to earn an income to live. They are, after all, professionals who sacrifice much in their striving to be successful. We at the WBF have never, and will never, threaten fighters or managers – we will never stand in the way of fighters who have other opportunities.
We will always strive for honesty, integrity and professionalism and rather than look at the other sanctioning bodies and how they operate, we prefer to look at ourselves and to do things as professionally as possible, always looking at how we can improve and how we can bring legitimacy to boxing.
Mexico is one of the greatest boxing countries in the world and has always been. The passion among boxing people in Mexico is virtually unrivalled. Mexico deserves the best. Mexico deserves having their champions being proud of their titles irrespective of the organization they represent. A champion is a champion! What Mexico doesn’t deserve are bullies who believe they are bigger than this great sport of ours. Boxing would surely be better off without such arrogant crooks who believe in intimidation and bullying, but are in fact the embodiment of corruption themselves.

The Cardiff southpaw, 19, has watched his older brother Gary win numerous belts in the past few years, but now he’s started a collection of his own.

Last weekend Mitch defeated Bridgewater’s tough Dean Mills to win the vacant British Masters bronze crown and he believes it will be the first of many.

“Winning a title was like a dream come true. You always imagine winning a belt growing up and when that day comes you can’t believe it,” he said.

“Before that fight I’d only boxed 14 rounds in total so it was great to jump straight up to eight rounds. The next step is ten rounds and then hopefully 12.

“I remember when Gary won his first title, it spurred him on more and he went on to win the Celtic and then the British title.

“Before my brother ever won any titles I used to look at British champions and think ‘god they’re so good, can I ever get to that level?’ Now, though, I’ve seen what it takes through watching Gary.

“I know that as long as you put the hours in at the gym and you keep learning, you can get there.

“Welsh boxing is going well at the minute. Nathan Cleverly is a world champion and, then there’s Gary and Gavin Rees and a few others winning things. It’d be lovely to have my name mentioned alongside those.”

A natural next step for Mitch would be a Welsh title clash with reigning champion Craig Woodruff.

However, Mitch defeated the Newport man in a four-rounder last year and it seems Woodruff isn’t keen on a return.

“We’ve been trying to get a fight with Craig Woodruff, but he doesn’t seem to want it,” Mitch explained.

“Obviously I want to win the Welsh title, but it seems we might have to go for the Celtic title instead. There’s also the possibility of Woodruff himself fighting for the Celtic and me boxing someone else for the vacant Welsh belt.

“Either way I’m going in the right direction and getting closer to where I want to be as boxer.”

Late last night the committee of the Malta Boxing Council decided to allow Clayton Vella another crack at the Welter-weight, Maltese ‘MBC International Title’. This happened after Valentin Stoychev who won the title last December by stopping Vella in the 5th round failed to defend his title, which has now been declared vacant.

However this chance comes at a price for Vella as he now has to defend his title against the more formidable GBA champion Alexander Menges, who is undefeated.

Daniel Micallef will be taking on the more experienced Marcen Gierke for the MBC international light-weight title. Micallef has been training heavily for this fight and is reported to be in top physical condition. Micallef has had a mixed professional career with ups and downs, his main contention point is the lack of sparing partners of a decent level in Malta.

Italian Pierre Paolo Cardinali who is no stranger to the Maltese Islands will be taking on former WBU champion David Burke in a non title fight over 6 rounds.

Aruona Calibaly will take on Turkish, Ali Kelik  in a 4×3. This will be Keklik’s professional debut.

Part of the proceedings from this boxing night will go towards the boxing outreach program for youths at risk that is being launched by MBC president Eva Rolle, later on this year.

This fight night is being promoted by Edwin Micallef of ‘Micallef Promotions’ in partnership with the Bugibba Hotel.

This double header event will be taking place at the ‘Bugibba Hotel’ on the 7th June, 2013. Tickets for the event are available at the door or by pre-booking on 99461751.

Boxing is a sport that for hundreds of years has fired the imagination of youths and the not so young. In many countries around the world many organizations have boxing programs which are intended to reach youths in under-privileged areas.

Boxing Programs have been proven not only to provide exercise & health but a feeling of camaraderie amongst those participating. Law enforcement agencies in many countries use boxing to bridge the gap between law enforcement, youths and the community.

Boxing outreach programs provide positive interaction between youths and the community, especially reaching out to those to those youths considered at risk for making poor choices in their lives.

‘Malta Boxing Council’ president Eva Rolle is expected to give details of Malta’s first outreach boxing program, during a press conference which is expected to be held at the Bugibba Hotel on the 30th of May.

The Press Conference will highlight the Professional Boxing Night, which is being promoted by Micallef promotions for the 7th of June and Eva Rolle’s plans for launching the Malta Out-Reach Boxing Program for youths.

Eva Rolle has already launched with success similar programs in Germany and Turkey.
“Boxing is not only about winning titles but it is a way to reach the community and youths by offering an alternative and healthier lifestyle and instilling self discipline leading to better integration into the community. The program will also offer support and advice to youths in avoiding negative decisions which lead to devastating life-long consequences” said Eva Rolle.

Eva Rolle along with local boxing promoter Edwin Micallef will be addressing the press conference which will be held at the TBH in Qawra on the 30th May, 2013. Two of Malta’s most prominent professional boxers, Daniel Micallef and Clayton Vellawill be back in action on the 7th of June at the Bugibba Hotel in Qawra in what promises to be an action filled fight card.

Daniel Micallef is taking on  Alexander Menges, a rising star of German boxing who has won all his professional fights by KO and last November beat Marcen Gierke by a unanimous decision to take the German International Welterweight Title. Micallef and Menges will be fighting for the MBC International Title.

Next on the fight card for Malta we find the popular Clayton Vella who will be taking on Marcen Gierke. Last November Vella failed to take the MBC International Title when he was stopped by Valentin Stoychev of Bulgaria in the 5th round at theOrpheum Theater in Gzira.

Both German boxers will have in their corner Robert Rolle “The German Gladiator” whose mother Eva Rolle is the president of the Malta Boxing Council.

On the under card Ali Keklik of Turkey will be making his professional debut andArouna Coulibaly will be entering the ring for his second professional fight. Last December Coulibaly beat Jonathan Mifsud in his professional debut.

This evening of professional boxing is being promoted by Edwin Micallef of ‘Micallef Promotions and the ‘Boxway Gym” of Qormi, Malta.

The Asian Boxing Confederation is fully engaged in a very busy year without a break in their competitions schedule. A month after the Youth Championships was held with great success in Subic Bay in the Philippines, the ASBC Asian Junior Championships will be hosted by the city of Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

The first day of the competition will be held on April 15 while the finals of the thirteen weight classes to be scheduled on April 20. Boxers who were born in 1997 and 1998 are eligible to compete in the continental championships which will be more than a good opportunity for the young talents to check their current skills before the AIBA Junior World Championships which to be scheduled in Kiev, Ukraine on August. AIBA is expecting record number of 15-16-year-old boxers in those worldwide championships in Kiev.

The last Asian continental event for this age group was held in Hanoi, Vietnam still back in 2004 where Kazakhstan secured eight gold medals and among the winners and medallists some boxers joined to the elite level with great results later on. Kazakhstan’s Merey Akshalov competed in the Beijing 2008 Olympics and won the Chemistry Cup last month, Philippines’ Charlie Suarez became an excellent lightweight boxer in the World Series of Boxing while China’s Maimaitituersun Qiong and Kazakhstan’s Vasiliy Levit reached the top of the podium in the Asian Elite Championships as well.

Joining to Kazakhstan which is the host nation, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan also will be competing in the continental event with full team. Altogether 114 talented young athletes from 14 nations will be fighting for the medals in Shymkent: Bhutan, China, DPR Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and the AIBA team.

Asia’s leading boxing nation Kazakhstan’s current junior squad is enough strong to be reached the top of the team rankings in the continental championships. Following their junior national event in January which was used as the selection tournament they competed in an international competition in Belarus and spent weeks in a training camp. Their preparations were successful and have got high number of gold medal contenders on home soil.

The Asian Boxing Confederation is hoping that the ASBC Asian Junior Continental Championships will be showing highest quality of boxing and the background of their boxing will be raised.

LONDON 2012 Olympian Cameron Hammond is looking to wow promoter Ricky Hatton this weekend.

The stylish Aboriginal boxer faces experienced Kiwi Daniel Roy Maxwell at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane on Saturday night (April 20).

And he’s eager to show ‘The Hitman’ how much he’s come on since making his pro debut in December.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back in the ring again and performing in front of a big crowd,” Hammond, 23, said.

“It was a great thrill boxing in front of a living legend in Ricky Hatton for my first fight and now I intend on showing him I’ve improved even further.”

As a top amateur who represented his country at major tournaments across the world, you’d expect Hammond to have all the ingredients needed to be considered a top prospect.

But trainer and manager Matt Clark says he’s been blown away with his charge’s development in the gym.

He said: “Cameron has shown already that he has exceptional speed. He has quick hands and very quick feet.

“After sparring with Michael Katsidis, Mick said Cameron would stop a lot of guys with that kind of speed and I certainly agree.

“We were delighted with his first performance in Hong Kong, last December. I’m confident he’s going to back that up on April 20.”

Saturday’s show is being staged by Hatton Promotions in association with Rightcross Entertainment.

The bill also features the professional debut of Aussie amateur sensation Damien Hooper, an Australian bantamweight title fight between Brad Hore and Roberto Lerio plus a clash between Brisbane-based Irishman Paddy Murphy and Alex Ahtong for the vacant WBF Asia Pacific welterweight crown.
