Arizona Boxing News 9/9

By Don Smith
BOXING FANS,
altWhen Arizona boxing impresario Al Fenn opened  The Phoenix Boys Center, aka Phoenix Boys & Girls Center, in 1965, it was to give kids a  venue where they  could go, free of charge, to vent  their youthful  frustrations and acquire life skills.  Over the years , thousands of neighborhood  children have taken advantage of the Center’s services.  Most of the boys and girls who choose to workout  at  the Center go on to be productive members of the community; few became professional  boxers.
One exception is Rafael Valenzuela (started boxing at age 8) who began using the Center regularly when he was roughly 13 years old.  Rafael, under the supervision of his father Rafael Sr., worked out long and hard everyday. Soon, it became evident  that the sport of boxing was more than a “stay in shape” hobby  for the budding amateur who became a fan favorite because of his ring  conquests and personal civility.

After graduating from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix Arizona, Rafael turned professional in 2004  and his successful debut was followed by 7 more consecutive and  impressive victories. He was on a roll and his instant success prompted some  rabid  boxing fans to mention his name in the same  pugilistic stratosphere  with Michael Carbajal and  Louie Espinoza, two former World Boxing Champions from Arizona.
In 2006, the young featherweight fell from the ranks of the undefeated when Alejandro Lopez beat the Phoenician  soundly  40-36, 40-36 and 39-37 in a four round contest . His fans thought the loss wan an aberration  and they were ecstatic  when Valenzuela won his next 5 fights to   up his record to 13-1 after a 2009  victory over Jose Garcia Bernal in Houston, Texas.   Rafael has fought twice since his Houston victory and both bouts were painful to watch. He was disqualified for  delivering low blows in his 6 round encounter with Luis Angel Paneto , a verdict he vehemently takes issue with. In 2011, he was “outworked” by journeyman Robert Guillen who left the ring victorious  by way of a Majority Decision. Boxing fans began to exit US Airways after the third round of the scheduled for six rounds bout…it wasn’t pretty by no stretch of the imagination.

Behind every personal  crash is an explanation! According to friends,  Rafael was simply exhausted from being a father, husband, boxer and he he wasn’t allowed to properly grieve after the passing  of two beloved friends and mentors; Al Fenn and Art Aragon in 2009.  He admits to being out of alignment for awhile ;but, says the downward spiral is over thanks to self respect and love from his family. It’s quite possible, the spirits of  Al Fenn  and Art Aragon  intervened.

Today, he is back at  the Phoenix Boys Center working out and hoping to resume his boxing career. The 126 lb featherweight  looks fit for the first time in three years and he is happy to report that the feud with his production company (Fan Base) is over. According to Fan Base, Valenzuela refused several fight offers including one  to headline an ESPN Card. Valenzuela says he was called and asked to fight at 140 lbs and he was given less than a week to prepare. Fan Base denies Rafael’s allegations.  No definite word on when the soon to be 27 year old  Rafael (B Day in Octore)   will return to action but rumors indicate it could be in October or November.

Short Jabs: The pro/am boxing card scheduled  for September 14 at Desert Diamond in Sahuarita Arizona (just outside of Tucson) has been cancelled.  Promoter ( Sonoran Group) hopes to reschedule before Christmas 2012 . Date and location to be determined. Super Middleweight  Adonis  “Superman” Stevenson  hopes to beat Don George this  fall and fight for a world title but his checkered past is stopping some fans from  buying tickets and supporting the Haitian born “Bad Boy.” Stevenson was convicted of pimping underage girls in Montreal Quebec, Canada 15 years ago and when the story of his past resurfaces last year, some fans  decided to skip his fights.  Adonis and his promoter tried to dismiss his bad behaviour  on youth indiscretion ;but, the fact that he has never apologized publicly rubs women’s group the wrong way…..plus the fact that  he  routinely hangs out with some unsavory looking characters….image is important. At 35, it’s time to grow up. Special thanks to the reporters who broke the story last year.

UFC 148 Results: SILVA VS SONNEN 2

alt

The Ultimate Fighting Championship presented UFC 148: Silva vs Sonnen II on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This epic rematch, billed by the UFC as its biggest fight of all time, started off in a similar vein to the first fight. Six seconds into the fight, Chael Sonnen had Anderson Silva on his back, and he kept him there for the entire round. In the second round, with both fighters up against the cage, Sonnen attempted a spinning backfist that caused him to stumble to the ground from his own momentum. Silva moved in with a ha knee to the body that landed clean as Sonnen was still on the ground with his back up against the cage. Silva continued throwing punches until Sonnen was covering up on the ground and the fight was stopped.

    Battle of the Badges 4
    FDNY vs. N.E. Law Enforcement
May 19, 2012, at Foxwoods Resorts Casino in Mashantucket CT

MASHANTUCKET, CT (April 18, 2012) – The nationally-acclaimed New York City Fire Department Boxing Team (“FDNY”) squares-off against a squad of New England Law Enforcement (“Team N.E.”) amateur boxers, Saturday night, May 19, in “Battle of the Badges 4,” at the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. ”Battle of the Badges 4″ (“BOB4″) is presented by National Public Safety Athletic League (“NPSAL”) in association with the FDNY Boxing Bravest, Mass Corrections Officers Federated Union Boxing Team (MCOFU) and Foxwoods Resort Casino. Defending champion Team N.E. trails FDNY in the series, 2-1.

Proceeds from the May 19th charitable event will benefit Work Vessels For Veterans, NPSAL and FDNY Boxing Bravest Team. More than a dozen matches are scheduled pitting FDNY against Team New England, which is primarily comprised of MCOFU boxers.

“Boston and New York has always had a great sports rivalry and this is our version of the Red Sox vs. Yankees or Pats vs. Jets,” BOB4 spokesperson Denis Marrese explained. “It’s a friends and family friendly event for some worthy causes. We started out helping veterans and we still do through Work Vessels For Veterans. It’s an honor for us to help these young men and women, especially those who’ve returned home from Afghanistan and Iraq, get started in their businesses. Work Vessels For Veterans is a worldwide organization that’s based in Connecticut. Two other great charities – NPSAL and FDNY Boxing Bravest – are also benefiting from Battle of the Badges 4. We’re also very fortunate to have Foxwoods Resort Casino in our corner this year as the host venue. Without Foxwoods, as well as our generous sponsors, promoting a major sporting event like this would be impossible.”

Doors open at 6:30 PM/ET with the first match scheduled to start at 7:30 PM/ET.

Go to www.BattleoftheBadges.info or www.foxwoods.com for additional information.

NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY ATHLETIC LEAGUE: “NPSAL” is committed to fundraising and promoting efficient techniques to promote recreation and sport/physical activities for youths and adults for the purpose of maintaining a healthy and positive lifestyle.

Peltz Boxing at Bally’s – Davis vs Medina
    Sat May 19 7:30PM ET

    alt

Atlantic City, NJ—Two junior middleweights who have compiled deceiving records against first-class opposition meet again when Jamaal Davis, of Philadelphia, PA, boxes Eberto Medina, of Newark, NJ, in the scheduled 10-round main event on Saturday evening, May 19, in the Grand Ballroom of Bally’s Atlantic City.
This will be the second meeting between Davis and Medina. In their first fight July 15, 2011, in the same ring, they boxed a six-round draw in the Fight of the Night.
Davis, 30, has been inactive since then. Originally, he was scheduled to box Harry Joe Yorgey, of Bridgeport, PA, on May 19, but Yorgey withdrew last week with a torn rotator cuff.
Medina, 28, has been busier. After losing a six-round decision to another Philadelphian, Julian Williams, last September in the winner’s backyard—also the Fight of the Night–Medina rebounded to score the biggest victory of his seven-year career when he upset previously unbeaten Przemyslaw Opalach on March 31 in Hamilton Township, NJ. Medina handed the Polish boxer his first setback in 10 pro fights via six-round decision.
Another big win for Medina (left) came early in his career when he upset another Polish fighter, Andrzej Fonfara, in Cicero, IL. Fonfara is now 21-2, 12 K0s.
Four of Medina’s losses have come against unbeaten fighters: Williams, Glen Tapia, of Passaic, NJ; Delen Parsley, of Brooklyn, NY; Ray Robinson, of Philadelphia. Overall, he is 6-7-1, 1 K0, and has been stopped once.
Davis, 30, has had chances to crack the world rankings but has come up short each time. A pro since 2003, Davis is 12-8-1, 6 K0s, also against tough competition. He has lost to world-rated fighters such as Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, PA; Joel Julio, of Colombia; Peter Quillen, of New York.
His 2011 loss to Rosado, in which he was stopped in the 12th and final round, was a see-saw affair at the time and one of the best fights at Bally’s Atlantic City in recent years.

WKN – The New Generation of Kickboxing ! - The origins of Full Contact Kick-boxing can be found in Thailand in the 2000 year old discipline of Muay Thai fighting. Thai boxing – like many other martial arts was devised, initially, for self-defence. It only developed into a sport when unarmed combat in warfare became less and less effective. It remains the national sport of Thailand. Thai boxers are awarded the same superstar status in their home nation as premier league footballers in Europe or basketball players in the USA. Full Contact Kick-boxing developed through a combination of Muay Thai and other martial art influences. It was aided in its rise, as were all martial arts at the time, when Bruce Lee exploded onto the big screen. The first time anything resembling what we now know as, Full Contact Kick-boxing began in the United States in the early 1970’s as Full Contact Karate. Read More
