On Saturday February 20th we had Gladiators Night XII where Team Malta won the majority of match with foreign athletes.
The main match was between Keith “the Speed” Azzopardi, Team Spartan, and Francesco Joao from Portugal in K1. In the first round Azzopardi entered with kicks while Francesco began to reduce the distance to diminish their effectiveness. In the second roundthe athletes maintained close combat and worked mostly with Boxing and with the knee. The third had the same rhythm, but the Maltese started putting in more Spinning Back Fists. “The Speed” won the match by points.
The Maltese athletes the won over the foreigners were (Team Spartan) Brandon “Bogon” Borg, Theon Camilleriand Shaun Falzon, (Team Noel) Christopher Rotin, Clayton Desira, (Malta Thai Boxing) Matthew Palcarz. In Boxing Kersten “the Bullet” Brown (Brown Boxing) and Jason Micallef (Team Noel) win by KO.
The only rematch was a Boxing match between Diane Schembri, TeamNoel, and Claire Ciantar, Lord’s Gym. Both athletes were at the same level where they kept pressing each other all the time though none took the upper hand. In the end the jury gave the match as a draw.
Other athletes that had a match with foreigners were: JesredPiscopo, Julian Mangion and Ryan Cachia.
This was the first time that the MaltaKickboxing Association (MKBA) and the Association of Boxing of Malta (MBA) worked together for this event. This led for more professionalism in the organization and safety for athletes.
