ZHAKIYANOV LOOKS TO SHOW OFF NEW SKILLS IN BELFAST

ZHANAT ZHAKIYANOV says he’ll be showing off some new skills when he returns to action at the Holiday Inn in Belfast on June 28.

The Kazakhstani puncher began working under the stewardship of trainer Ricky Hatton just a month ago, but he believes his ability has moved to a new level in that short time.

Zhanat, who is the number one ranked super-bantamweight contender in Europe, had largely trained by himself or with family members in his native country.

“Ricky makes me think more in the ring,” the 25-year-old said via a translator. “Before I was like a bull and used to think one hard punch was enough, but Ricky makes me relax, move and defend better.

“I used to train with my brother or on my own in Kazakhstan and we never did any of the exercises I do now so I am learning new things every day.

“I hope to show everyone what I’ve picked up in this next fight and then move to bigger and harder fights later in the year.”

Zhanat has been signed to Hatton Promotions since 2011 and has appeared on cards in Blackpool and Hong Kong, but he still has trouble explaining his connection with ‘The Hitman’ to his fans back home.

“People in my country do not believe me when I tell them Ricky Hatton is training me,” he explained. “I have to show them pictures and videos to prove it and they are like ‘wow’.

“I know I am very lucky to be working with Ricky because in Kazakhstan and all of the former Soviet countries he is a hero. People admire him because of his career and because he beat Kostya Tszyu, who was also a hero.” Read the rest of this entry »

RESURGENCE IN THE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION ADDS MORE IMPORTANCE
TO TONIGHT’S KOVALEV – WHITE IBF ELIMINATOR

Due to last night’s surprise announcement that leading IBF light heavyweight contender Karo Murat was forced to pull out of his mandatory July bout with IBF Champion Bernard Hopkins due to visa problems, the winner of tonight’s clash between Sergey Kovalev and Cornelius White on NBC Sports Network Fight Night (8 p.m. Eastern) will immediately become the mandatory challenger for Hopkins’ title.
“This pushes up the timetable considerably,” said promoter Kathy Duva. “Both Kovalev and White accepted this fight knowing that a win would ensure them a title shot. Now, it appears, the winner will likely fight for the title in his next bout. What was already a compelling match just got a lot more interesting and significant.”
These are exciting times in the light heavyweight division. Following Adonis Stevenson’s spectacular one-punch knockout of longtime champion Chad Dawson there is much speculation about what is to come. One of the deepest divisions in boxing, light heavyweight should provide plenty of action in the coming months.

In addition to the explosive Stevenson, the cream of the light heavyweight crop includes the ageless Hopkins, Nathan Cleverly, Beibut Shumenov, Karo Murat, Tony Bellew, Jean Pascal, Lucien Bute, Tavoris Cloud and newcomer Andrej Fonfara. In addition, there is speculation that Super Middleweight kingpin Andre Ward may eventually move up to 175, as might the UK’s crowd pleasing Carl Froch.

The winner of tonight’s bout on the NBC Sports Network Fight Night will now be assured a world title fight in the not too distant future and instantly become a member of this elite group of light heavies.

“I remember when light heavyweight was considered one of boxing’s glamour divisions,” promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events said. “During the 70′s and early 80′s the division featured a virtual “hall of fame,” beginning with Bob Foster and moving on through John Conteh, Marvin Johnson, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Dwight Muhammad Qawi and Michael Spinks. Personally, I will never forget witnessing 1980′s ‘fight of the year’ between Saad Muhammad and Yaqui Lopez from ringside.”

Duva stated, “There is so much talent concentrated in this division right now. I believe this is the most exciting group to emerge on the light heavyweight scene since the 70′s.” She added, “Tonight’s NBC Sports Network fight will only add to the buzz!”

The Jennnings-Fedosov, Kovalev-White and Cruz-Narh fights top a seven-bout card at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. Doors open at 6:15pm ET. Former USBA Heavyweight Champion, “Fast” Eddie Chambers, 36-3, 18 KO’s of Philadelphia, PA will battle Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu, 12-1, 9 KO’s, of South Africa in the 10-round heavyweight co-feature.

NBC Sports Network will feature these two fights on their August 3rd Fight Night series. The telecast begins at 10:30PM EDT.

Tomasz “Goral” Adamek, 48-2, 29 KO’s, of Gilowice Poland and Jersey City has also been added to the Mohegan Sun card. He will take on Hartford, CT favorite, Tony Grano, 20-3-1,16 KO’s in a 10-round heavyweight war.
