The AIBA Executive Committee met for a three-day Extraordinary EC Meeting from July 9-11 to discuss various matters, including the awarding of hosting rights for the major tournaments related to qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championships will be held in the city of Chongqing in south-west China after the Executive Committee unanimously approved the city’s bid, presented by China Boxing Association President Mr Chang Jianping. The 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championships will be the only qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In regard to the Continental Olympic Qualifying Events, a delegation including the Moroccan Minister for Youth and Sport, Mr. Moncef Bellkhayat, the Royal Moroccan Boxing Federation President Mr Abdel Jaouad Belhaj and Moroccan IOC Member Nawal El Moutawakel, presented a bid to host the African Olympic Qualification tournament in Casablanca. The AIBA Executive Committee unanimously approved the proposal to award the hosting rights for the tournament to Morocco.

The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro secured the rights to host the Americas Qualifying Tournament in the future Olympic City, which will allow Brazil to develop its blossoming boxing talent. Brazil has already made an important step on the road to preparing its boxers for the Rio 2016 with the agreement to set up the “Young Boxer Brazil” project, in cooperation with AIBA and the National Olympic Committee of Brazil. As part of this project, a training center will be set up to serve up to 100 young athletes from the age of 12 up and will be based at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Park.

The right to host the European Olympic Qualification Tournament for London 2012 was awarded to the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The new administration of the Turkish Boxing Federation, under the leadership of President Eyup Gozgec, won out over bids from the cities of Dublin and Yerevan.

The city of Astana secured the rights to host the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament after the Chinese Boxing Association withdrew its bid due to its candidacy for the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championships. The capital city of Kazakhstan will also be the venue for the 2010 AIBA Congress and the 2011 World Junior Championships and will thus be hosting a major AIBA event for each of the next three years.

The Oceania Qualification Tournament was conditionally awarded to the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia, subject to negotiation of a suitable hosting fee. This is to accommodate the fact that AIBA needs to dispatch officials from other continents to the event, due to insufficient numbers of qualified officials in the Oceania Boxing Confederation.
