AIBA moves locations of Congress and 2011 World Championships
The AIBA Executive Committee met for a three-day Extraordinary EC Meeting from July 9-11 to discuss various matters, including the awarding of hosting rights for the major tournaments related to qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Due to ongoing leadership problems in the Korean Boxing Association, which was set to host the 2010 AIBA Congress later this year and the 2011 Men’s World Championships, both in the city of Busan, the Executive Committee decided to move the host cities of both 2010 AIBA Congress and 2011 Men’s World Championships to different countries than Korea.
“The Congress and the World Championships are two extremely important events for any sport governing body,” said AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu. “They can only succeed with support from a highly professional and committed local organizing committee backed by both the host cities and the national host federation. Unfortunately, given the current situation with the governing body for boxing in South Korea, such conditions are clearly not in place. We therefore find ourselves obliged to seek alternative venues for both these events.”
The AIBA Executive Committee gave the full right to select the most appropriate cities of these two events to the discretion of AIBA President.
