Jan Zaveck Vs Rafal Jackiewicz
Boxing – During a recent HBO broadcast, an onscreen graphic depicted the top welterweights in the world according to the network. One name likely unfamiliar to the American boxing public was that of Jan Zaveck, the reigning IBF Welterweight Champion. The Slovenian-born, Germany-based title holder is currently wrapping up preparations for his second defense of the title he won last December. Opposing him Saturday will be his mandatory challenger and lone career conqueror, Rafal Jackiewicz. A win would go a long way in improving Zaveck’s standing among the 147-pound elite, and perhaps give him the valuable bargaining chip needed to entice one of the big names in the division into the ring.
Zaveck (29-1, 17 KOs) of Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany by way of Ptuj, Slovenia burst onto the international scene with his title-winning three-round destruction of Isaac Hlatshwayo in South Africa late last year.

Dagoberto Aguero shocked the Chinese spectators
Dominican Republic’s new sensation Dagoberto Aguero shocked the local Chinese spectators after beating top favourite Li Chao in the flyweight semi-final on the third day of competition at the World Combat Games.
The contest finished in the first round after two minutes when the ringside doctor suspended the bout due to Li Chao’s injury. Therefore, despite the 1:1 score the 17-year-old Dominican athlete advanced to the final in Beijing, where he will fight for the gold against South Asian Games silver medalist Muhammad Waseem of Pakistan.
Powerful Aguero became Panamerican Junior Champion and achieved a valuable silver medal at the La Romana Cup in his first elite tournament last year and finished second at the Panamerican Youth Championships in February, but did not qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.
As expected, reigning Olympic Champion and two-time World Champion Zou Shiming also advanced to the final after beating Dominican Republic’s Juan Gabriel Medina by 6:3. In the gold medal match he will face 18-year-old Safoviddin Yusufi of Tajikistan.
After beating top-class athlete Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan in the quarter-final by accepted scores, local newcomer Zhang Jiawei won another bout against Jordan’s Arabic Games winner Mohamed Abdelaziz Al-Wadi in the semi-final. His next rival will be Joseph Cordina of Wales in the new 56kg weight division.
Two-time Olympian Assylbek Talasbayev of Kyrgyzstan and his younger compatriot Ermek Sakenov also reached the finals after easy victories against their Polish rivals. Lightweight Talasbayev will face Mohamed Ramadan Eliwa of Egypt, while Sakenov’s opponent will be Hu Richabilige of China in the 64kg weight category.
One of the most eagerly anticipated finals will be the welterweight bout, where Chinese top favourite and Beijing Olympian Xinjiang-based Maimati Tusunqiong will be fighting against the strong Vasile Belous of Moldova.
Powerful 26-year-old Vladimir Milevskij of Lithuania hammered his teenage opponent, Tajikistan’s Navruz Jafoyev, in the middleweight class but can expect a harder final contest versus Zhang Jianting of China.
Another Chinese-Lithuanian final fight will be held in the light heavyweight division, where National Games and Benazir Bhutto Tournament winner Meng Fanlong’s rival will be the relatively inexperienced Tadas Tamasauskas.
Asian Games gold medalist and Beijing Olympics quarterfinalist Djakhon Kurbanov of Tajikistan was surprisingly defeated by the experienced Constantin Bejenaru or Romania. It was not the first time in Djakhon Kurbanov’s long career that he has been injured during a fight. Bejenaru’s opponent will be Jordan’s Ahmad Al-Teimat in the final.
Olympic Games silver medalist Zhang Zhilei of China continued his successful series against Chouaib Bouloudinat of Algeria in the super heavyweight class semi-final. The 27-year-old local world-class boxer will face Mihai Nistor of Romania in the gold medal match.
Host nation China has seven boxers in the finals and Romania, Lithuania and Kyrgyzstan two each, while seven other nations have qualified one athlete each for the 1st World Combat Games’ finals.

Wladimir Klitschko Vs Samuel Peter — IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs) today spoke about his upcoming September 11 mandatory defense against former heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (34-3, 27 KOs). This is a rematch of their first fight which took place 5 years in what was one of the most exciting heavyweight fights in recent memory. Wladimir called Peter “The most competitive fighter I’ve ever faced” and vowed to “defend my title in the most impressive way possible….I see myself knocking out Samuel Peter, right hand, left hook, whatever.”

Jean Pascal Vs Bernard Hopkins — 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KO’s) and WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1, 16 KO’s) have agreed to terms for a December 18th bout in Quebec, according to boxing news from Dan Rafael of ESPN. Hopkins, who has looked fairly pedestrian in his last two fights, says he expects to have the contract signed by this Friday.

Super-middleweight Enrique Ornelas is training in Montreal, in preparation for his first world title shot as he faces WBO champion Robert Stieglitz set for October 15.
The Russian born champion Stieglitz was stopped by Ornelas brother, Librado Andrade in 2008 and will be making the third defense of the WBO crown he won one year ago in August. Ornelas is ranked in the number ten spot of the WBO rankings and is best known for fighting Bernard Hopkins last December, losing a twelve round decision.
The German middleweight WBA Super World Champion Felix Sturm (33-2-1, KOs 14) and the challenger Giovanni Lorenzo (29-2-0, KOs 21) from Dominican Republic had a public workout. A lot of fans watched the boxers in the shopping mall “Köln Arcaden”. Lorenzo made time for the fans and signed many autographs and gave many photos away.

Juan Manuel Marquez Vs Michael Katsidis — Golden Boy Promotions Ceo Richard Schaefer is saying that WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KO’s) has accepted terms to fight WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KO’s) on November 27th, in a fight that will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Marquez is coming off of an impressive 12 round unanimous decision against Juan Diaz on July 31st. It was the second time that Marquez had beaten Diaz. This time, however, Diaz was less aggressive and looked to be pacing himself so that he wouldn’t get knocked out again.
Katsidis looked sensational in taking out Britain’s Kevin Mitchell in a 3rd round stoppage in May. Katsidis came into Upton Park facing an unfriendly large pro-Mitchell audience.

Darren Barker Out — The clash between British and European middleweight champion Darren Barker and challenger Matthew Macklin is off after Barker suffered a hip injury in training.
Barker was set to fight Matthew Macklin at Birmingham’s LG Arena on 18 September on Sky Box Office. It is a sickening blow for Macklin who hasn’t fought since late 2009

Mike Tyson’s Opinion On Heavyweight Division — The former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Mike Tyson, has called for a heavyweight showdown between WBA champion David Haye and the Klitschko brothers. Tyson is convinced that Haye has the necessary abilities to challenge and win the heavyweight title, but he won’t be getting there unless he fights Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.
.
.

WBA world heavyweight champion, David Haye says the reasons why the talks broke down between him and the Klitschko brothers are financial – ”I wanted equal division of royalties, 50% of all income, including profits from ticket sales, but, they refused, because of their contract with the German television station RTL – Unlike me, they want a larger share of income. They do not want to share, that is unacceptable” – says Haye to Boxingscene.com. – “Then I suggested an alternative. They get all the profits from German television, and I from the UK station, again the answer was negative. “ Haye’s feels that the brothers are not acting correctly and vows not to cave in under the pressure of negotiations.

Assylbek Talasbayev Advances to the Semi-Final in Beijing

Assylbek Talasbayev (Photo: Jarkyn Bayzhigitova)
The experienced lightweight fighter returned to the ring this year when he became National Champion in February. Talasbayev’s main target is to qualify for his third Olympic Games in London as first Kyrgyz boxer.
Kant-based Talasbayev won his quarter-final contest against Tariq Zia of Pakistan by 12:8 and will therefore travel back home with at least a bronze medal. In his next bout he will face Polish youngster Tomasz Michelus.
Talasbayev’s new compatriot, 22-year-old welterweight boxer Maksat Alimbayev, was born in Kazakhstan in 1988 but changed his nationality this year because he could not get involved in the Kazakh national team.
Alimbayev reached the semi-final after beating Algeria’s Ilyas Abbadi who competed at the AIBA Youth World Championships in Baku. The Kyrgyz boxer will be a great match against King’s Cup winner Maimati Tusunqiong of China in the semi-final.
The young local boxer is one of the biggest talents in China and he has got a good chance to be included in his country’s squad for the Asian Games. Tusunqiong won against Czech Martin Svoboda in the quarter-final by 12:3 in the welterweight division.
Another Chinese boxer, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Tournament winner Meng Fanlong, won his first contest in Beijing against Romanian Cezar Juratoni in an unexpectedly close bout. The Chinese athlete who took part in the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan will fight against Ahmed El-Hendawi of Egypt for the final.
Panamerican Junior Champion 17-year-old Dagoberto Aguero of the Dominican Republic in his second tournament among elite boxers outpointed Moldova’s newcomer Gheorghe Dascal and will face Chinese National Games winner Li Chao in the semi-final, who defeated Mohammed Bedir of Egypt by 7:0 in the 52kg weight class.
Vasile Belous of Moldova is only 22, but he has been a member of the national elite team since 2006 and therefore had enough experience to beat Jan Romanovskij of Lithuania in the welterweight quarter-final.
The World Combat Games continue with twenty-two semifinals in the next competition day, with at least half of the remaining boxers under 21 years old.

New Director For “World Series Of Boxing” Americas

Eric J. Parthen
Eric J. Parthen takes up the reins of WSB Americas this week and his first task will be to set up the new WSB Americas office in Colorado Springs.
Parthen is a 1994 magna cum laude graduate from Augustana College and was previously the Director of National Governing Body (NGB) Development for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). Tasked with starting this new division in March, 2005, Parthen and his staff worked to develop enhanced organizational capabilities in the national sport governing bodies that the USOC oversees.
Parthen first started with the USOC in the fall of 1993 after earning an internship during his senior year at Augustana. After graduation, he spent 18 months working as an Engagement Controller for Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) before returning to the USOC in April, 1996. Since then, he has held numerous positions in the Olympic Family including most recently as the Executive Director of USA Boxing, where he led all staff operations for the national governing body for the sport of amateur boxing.
Under his leadership, USA Boxing won two medals at the 2004 Olympic Games including the first Gold medal since 1996. In addition, Parthen stabilized operations and significantly increased revenue by engaging new partners during his nearly three year term.
In recognition of his various achievements, Parthen was a 2005 recipient of the “Finest Under Forty Outstanding Young Alumnus Award” from the Augustana College Alumni Association. In addition, he was profiled in the Colorado Springs Business Journal’s “2003 Forty Achievers Under 40.”
An active volunteer for the Colorado Springs chapter of the United Way and various other local charities, Parthen and his wife, Kelly, reside in Colorado Springs, Colorado with their 5 year old son, Kale, and their 3 year old daughter, Makena.

Kremlin Bears WSB Team launch name and logo
The city of Moscow in Russia today became the third of the twelve WSB franchisees to launch its team name and logo. The KREMLIN BEARS will be competing in the WSB European conference against teams from Istanbul, Milan and Paris.
The KREMLIN BEARS External Relations & Development Director Anna Fedorova commented on the corporate identity: “In searching for a suitable identity for our franchise we wanted to avoid stereotypical images of boxing. In doing so, we are aiming to expand our target audience and draw the attention of those who loves sports, but who have not necessarily seen a boxing match. We want to see more women, youths, businessmen and politicians at our events. By analogy to other franchisees of the WSB we have used the name of an animal, a symbol of Russia, for our team. The bear is a huge, furious, yet clever animal. Furthermore, it is one of the few predatory animals that rise on their hind legs in to attack. We think that this logo is easy to remember and is ideally suited to team merchandise. The brand book is ready now and we plan to start a line of interesting high-quality souvenir products for fans of boxing and our team”.
